Im sure this has been asked a million times but I have a new to me Interstate and love it but have been going over it. I removed the stock petcock and rebuilt it after I hooked up the chrome knob gas leaks from the petcock by the shaft. did not leak there before! Do I need to order a new petcock? I would like to stay with what on the bike. Thanks

The OEM petcock was a pos and gave problems if you want to stay with the OEM rebuild it.

If you rebuilt it with an OEM "cover set" (169530-me5-025) and
it's not doing right, then you either messed up the rebuild (easy to
do) or need a new petcock (about $125 for OEM)...

I prefer a manual Pingel petcock. No more hydolock worries. Looks sexy too and you get rid of that big plastic chrome plated thingie. Real easy to reach under the tank while riding. I turn it off as I drift into my garage.

Just sayin'

I don't find it easy to turn the knob on the Pingel but I'm old and ham-fisted I suppose.  I'm saying that comment is gonna vary with the user. I'd love to have the ease of the OEM knob with the reliability of the Pingel but that would take lots of mod work to do. The shafts are in different directions from the inlet & outlet.  I added an extension onto the Pingel lever on both of my bikes that have one. Even so, hard to find even with gloves off. Doesn't help I have somewhat reduced tactile sense in my hands from days gone by.

Other Honda petcocks. I've a manual one off of a VT1100T, and will try it out whenever I finally take the tank off my IS to do all the work I wish I had the space/time to do it. The reserve stack is defiantly a different length than the Valk's.

To the original question , did you remove the petcock from the tank. if you did you have to line it up to point in the right direction to line up with the chrome piece.  On my display model (cut apart to show how it works) the shaft that sticks out of the petcock has 2 flat O-rings with a raised up piece on each edge of the flats. So there are four seals that the gas has to get past to leak out. I would guess that your shaft and chrome piece are not in line with each other causing the o- rings to loose contact on  the inside of the bore or the o-ring in the tank is leaking and the gas ends up on the shaft or the nut is not tight enough  or there is dirt on the sealing surface. Let us know if you can give us more information
