I have had 3 water pumps go out in my shop and last week I had two more fail in the shop. Go figure. Change your coolant and keep the system clean and always use the correct coolant

In the early days of the Valk I heard about lots of water pump failures. Nearly all were caused by the use of coolants containing silicates. These days nearly all coolants are silicate free so it's a lot less likely the wrong coolant will end up in one of these bikes.
This was a frequent topic on the board back when our Valks were new. At the time, Dex-Cool (developed by GM) was one of the few mass marketed coolants that was silicate free, so many Valk owners used the stuff. I've been using it in my '98 Tourer (175K miles) and '99 IS (99K miles) and haven't had any problems.
Dex-Cool is now the dominant coolant in the marketplace. Ford has switched to it and the basic green Prestone formula is apparently a 'Dex-clone'.

Feel free to dogpile me, it won't be the first or last time, but my 98 Tourer with 175,000 miles still has the original coolant. I check it about every five years, and it is still perfectly clean and tests to -34ยบ. If it meets all the specifications, is perfectly clean, and I have no heat issues, I'm leaving it. Yes, I'm still on the original water pump too.
