Greetings from California:)
Not braggin'... just wantin' to share a few things that made my ride (1998 GL1500CT) funner to and from the Black Hills of South Dakota...

1.  Before leaving, I followed the detailed instructions from a former post modifying the "shift shaft support" on the cheap.  EXCELLENT change in shifting...crisp and concise...not a single prob in 3k miles (approx.).

2.  Also installed the 6 degree trigger wheel and ran Super gas...no probs and fun power.

3.  Stayed hydrated alternating water with electrolyte beverages.

4.  Under britches!...a pair of SAXX and a pair of LD's.  Great comfort and "crowd control"Smiley

5.  Ultimate Seat...dang good!

The stock handlebars (beach?) had me leaning back a bit too far.  The sections of concrete highway and rhythmic pounding got old fast.  I now changed to a pair of my old H.D. Electraglide bars that have me more upright...we'll see.
The motor (as you know) is freakin' amazing and this is with bone stock pipes!

                                     Cheers,
                         Howler Jack

Glad you had a great trip!!
Is this the shifter pivot that you made? I have been thinking of making one. Good to here such a positive review on it.

Nice!

I ordered the stuff for the shifter mod, but haven't had a chance to do it yet. Great to hear another positive review.

I, too, am not too thrilled with the stock bars. I feel like they curve in too much, so my wrists aren't in a natural position. I haven't gone crazy looking yet, but maybe over the winter. Not that I need more projects or anything.

Oh, Welcome to the forum. I'm relatively new here, too, but it's a good bunch of folks. Some of the political posts get a bit ugly, but that's not the norm here. Lots of great info, too.

that trigger wheel will add some power down low but is advanced too far up top....if you run hard and fast you will be suffering pre-ignition and gas milage will really tank

I run 6-7 degrees advanced on my 98 Standard and have mileage in the mid 30's using midgrade gasoline
Have the Dyna 3000 programmable ignition, I dont see/hear any preignition. Lots of other folks running other trigger wheels as well, anyone seeing loss of mileage? The only thing that impacts my mileage is keeping the throttle off WFO.

Took my trigger wheel off went back to stock and had Bob aka attic rat do his GLH package (goes like hell) and get about 7-8 more mpgs. Even with the extra power of the engine mods.

That is one modification I have been saving for! Cant wait to experience a bike with Attic Rat performace work, dyna 3000 ignition, viking exhaust. The only thing that might top it would be to then supercharge it!
