You can remove the windshield and then unscrew the bolts at the top of the fairing, the ones that hold the fairing to the frame, and the fairing is then free to rotate down on the pivots which are also the turn signal brackets..

It doesn't rotate too far, just clears so you can see inside easier, and get access to items inside.

Unless mine has a hang up?

Use a putty knife, as you turn the screws, pry gently and they will come out of the outer fairing.

Then you need to use pliers, gently grip the insert and unscrew the screw. Do a search, but you glue the insert back in, apply a little anti-size on the screw thread, and lightly screw in.

Your priorities are right! Do you really need a tach?  Smiley

I just replaced all four bulbs in my dash the other day, I've never known the fairing to rotate down, its very easy to remove the fairing and let it rest on the front fender (on a towel of course), remove the rubber caps and turn the socket holder and the little bulb and holder come out. I put in red LED replacement bulbs from Superbright LED's, now everything is red, only shows at night. Make sure to check the new bulbs come on before putting the fairing back on, its easy to twist the socket holder too far and lose the connection to the bulb.
This whole process only took about an hour, Also changed out the H4 bulbs to LED while the fairing was off.

Once you remove the windshield, there are two brass Phillips head screws, you also have two that have to be removed from the dash, one on each side (these are the same as the speaker panels), there are two 10mm nuts in the lower section of the speaker panel area that face back towards the tank, remove all  those and it should pull forward, cover the fender and rest it right there.
Number 22 on the Fairing Diagram, # 13 on the Turn Signal Diagram.

I removed the speaker covers and had fair access to the guage lights without too much contortion.  Same risk of spinning brass fittings as above.  Replaced the OEM bulbs with blue LEDs from SuperBright LEDs.

Make sure to check the new bulbs come on before putting the fairing back on, its easy to twist the socket holder too far and lose the connection to the bulb.

Also remember that LEDs require directional current, so if any don't light, rotate the bulb 180 degrees in the receptacle and try again.

Curious did you remove the fairing or were you able to reach in and change the bulbs? I can reach in but am unable to feel or see the bulb holders once the speaker pods are off. I should get a small mirror next time the speaker pods are off and see if I can locate the sockets.

You would find that a few of the bulbs are pressing right into the circuit board and cannot be revealed without removing the complete assembly.

I did not remove the entire fairing.  I removed the two speaker covers and the meter panel screws using the diagram in the manual (Page 19-7) as a guide.  The meter panel screws are covered by the speaker covers.  I didn't disconnect all the wiring harnesses from the panel, just pulled it away from the fairing.

What bulbs did you use for replacements?  I used some LEDs from SuperBrightLEDs, but they're not much brighter than the stock I removed.  Sad

I went back with stock bulbs … It's just the way I roll...I thought about putting in new headlight bulbs  Wink
But I will be ordering new inserts and screws and that's when I'll replace the headlight bulbs.
