was riding pretty hard, up, around and down the bluffs today..ran like a champ..hit the highway to go home and all the sudden lost power{still running}..still idles..no pops..hard to explain the sound but I would say flat and vibrating.. basically doesn't want to take fuel..really hard to take off from a stop..will run at 65 mph ok but tops out at 75 full throttle..just from the finger test in the exhaust seems like all cylinders are firing..seems like it could be a hundred different things..btw,,no I have not worked on or changed anything lately..hoping 1 of you knowledgeable folks could help me get started in what to look for/ test..after thought.. I did open the gas cap thinking maybe vent hose..no change..any ideas are greatly appreciated

Being that you ruled out a kinked vent line. I would suspect a failing petcock. A new cover set is probably in order.

Check the plugs. Mine would do this every 10,000 mi. Done it twice so I switched to Iridiums plugs. OEM says to change every 8,000. I ride until they quit and keep a spare on board. Old habit from dirt days.

could be that something from the road is blocking the air inlet on the airbox.

I agree. Same has happened to me. Mine ended up being a small split in vacuum line. Couldn’t see it, but found spraying starting fluid around hoses.

If you suspect the petcock is beginning to fail, go to reserve to see if that clears up the issue or fill the tank. If either resolves the issue, order the cover set and a vacuum line, replace both. And clean the petcock very well inside with cleaner and compress air.

mine did the same thing. Installed the cover set thing. Did it again a year later. Thats when I went to a Pingel. Been ten years and no trouble whatsoever. The problem is that the OEM when functioning perfectly can only supply exactly enough fuel for hard accelerations or operating at top speed. Any reduction in fuel delivery capability is a rideability issue at max flow situations. The Pingel easily flows as much as the engine demands under any conditions and has no diaphragm to tear. Just keeps working and working. its a quality piece of equipment

Wow, that’s odd. I’ve got a combined 190k on original plugs. I’ve had new ones waiting in the wings for about 3 years now. One day I’ll get around to switching them out.

I have over 40k on mine, check them occasionally to see if tan, but not going to change NGKs every 8k unless there's a problem how they're firing--and if there is it's likely not the plugs!

To update, I touched the exhaust pipes again today and no. 1 cylinder is cold..Pulled that plug wire and started it up..runs the same..could 1 dead cylinder cause the problems I described above..I completely toppped off with fuel and switched to reserve..no change. I just want to be sure the petcock is the problem before changing it.. Thanks for the help

Sometimes it can be a little difficult to feel one missing cylinder. Yes fix that first and retest.

1 more observation..if I let the bike sit for 1/2 an hour or more it seems to run fine for a cpl mins..then the loss of power returns..would this help confirm a petcock problem?

Yes, absolutely, fuel trickles in then gets used up faster than the fuel valve can replace it.

Ditto on the above, these engines are so easy on plugs, unless you have some issue that's fouling plugs, every 100K miles changes are fine. Even at 100K, you won't likely see any performance change with new plugs......it's just one of those feel good things for doing something nice for the old gal.

As you've said many times before. To everything there are exceptions. Maybe this winter I'll get my ride completely gone thru as the parts keep piling up for the project! Otherwise I'll keep riding until Nov. Hopefully the weather stays good. Remember I live in a climate that the air humidity/temps can go up and down like a yo-yo. scarylarry thanks for the update.
