I was talking to a fellow rider the other day and mentioned that I would like to go to Big Bend National Park in Texas next year. He told me that he had read something about it not being too safe anymore due to being so close to the border. Anyone have knowledge of that situation?

I go there every other year or so... The park itself is perfectly safe, but I wouldn't dally in any of the border towns (Of course, the closest now is Presidio, which is a happy hike outside of the park)

There's too much attention focused on a US National Park, those who would cause harm prefer to stay more anonymous, throw the lights on with attention, and they scatter elsewhere like the cockroaches they are...

I've been going to Big Bend National Park every 2 yrs for many many yrs.  Going again next spring if all goes well.   Mid March is the best time, that's when spring starts turning the vegetation all sorts of colrs.   Nobody hardly goes there from end of May through August......too danged hot.  There are some great scenic hiking trails there, and many miles of scenic riding.  The park is one of my favorite places to take a ride to.   The Park is about 600 miles west of Houston.    Make reservations ahead for hotel/motel as there are not many places to stay there other than camping sites.   There is a small town on the west side of the park in the town of Studde Butte.  They have a reasonable hotel rate there and small 2 bedroom cabins with kitchens if you like.  There is a hotel up in the top of the mountains inside of the park.   You top over a mountain pass and down in an old volcanic basin there is a small community there with a restaurant.    Used to be there was absolutely no crime in the park.......the last couple years it has gotten a lot worse especially at sites along the way where you park and walk a short distance to scenic places.   They now have signs up in these scenic places to watch your stuff.    If traveling in a group leave someone with your bikes.  I haven't heard of anyone being personally assaulted but they will break into your car or bike and run back across the Rio Grand River.

Hey Digger, is it still possible to take the row boat over to Santa Elena? We had a good lunch over there while we camped out.

I'm not Digger, but no... There are no (legal) border crossings in the park, closest is I believe Presidio, about 80 miles or so west of the park... (And at the end of a VERY fun road I might add!)
