OK,  John Wayne, and Harry Carey starred in the 1948 movie The Three Godfathers.  It ends with Only John Wayne alive walking into a bar with the baby followed soon after by Ward Bond.  Happily ever after.

I swear Ive seen an earlier version where the three "outlaws" choose to drink the poisen Alkalai water so they can reach safety with the baby.  At the end one or all of them stagger into a church and collapse (and die?), having sacrificed all for the child.

Can find it!!  Anybody out there have an idea?

Im looking for the earlier version of the John Wayne one.  The one where they become poisened with alkalai and collapse in the church.  Any ideas of the name and when it was made and who stars in it?

There were two previous films to the one with Wayne. The first was "The Three Godfathers" 1916 silent with Harry Carey Sr.
The next was " Three Godfathers" 1936 with Chester Morris. My guess is that it was this one, although I can't guarantee that.

It's not "Terror in Tiny Town," or "My Name is Nobody" but those are some of my favorite western movies. Highly recommend both (sorta).
