Cracks In The Saddlebag Lids

Last year I added the chrome saddlebag top racks (from MC Enterprises) and recently noticed small cracks in the lids around most of the holes.  I did the install using the rubber grommets supplied for all the drilled holes.  Has anyone else experienced this problem after adding these racks?  Thanks in advance.

On the GL1800 Goldwing site

the guys were adding Luggage Racks , much the same thing as the racks you added.

The solution for the same problem was to use Giant washers they were thin and the I.D. was just big
enough for the bolt to go through.

I feel using this big washer (large dia) in conjuction with the rubber grommet you speak of
might solve your problem.

First, I agree with him re. the washers...look for something called Star Washers. They have a depression in the center the size of the leg on the racks and come with a rubber washer the size of the metal, and as he said...the hole is just the right size for the bolt.

But first, remove the racks and the lids, then pick up some fast setting JB Weld. Mix it up...should remain dark in color but you can paint it later if needed. Using a small brush or very flexible blade, spread the mixture around the hole on the underneath side, being careful not to block the hole. Let dry good and then sand it down by hand to make certain it's flat so the bolts, washers, etc., will be flat against the inside. Then remount the lids using the above mentioned Star washers. The JB Weld will support the racks and stop the spread of the cracks, the washers will spread the weight more evenly. A personal note....the very thing you mentioned is the main reason I never mounted racks on my bag lids. A long time ago I had the same problem with the trunk rack on an older Gold Wing and it took some special fabrication underneath to keep from buying a complete new trunk lid. Frankly, these lids aren't/weren't made to be load carrying and are often overloaded...but the racks do add to the looks in many cases.
