Hi All,  Did the petcock rebuild using the kit from HDL as well as the new filter screen.  All went well bike seems to run just fine, after it warms up.  My questions are 1. After the rebuild it appears that I have to use the choke to keep it running until it is warm enough to ride, what could be the issue here.  2.  appears that the reserve is somewhat shorter than with the original, rode 151 miles on the tank did not hit reserve and put in 4.6 gals.  Before I would hit reserve at 130 or so.   What are your thoughts on these two differences..  Thnaks

I can't see how the "cover set" rebuild would affect either of those?

Sounds like you disturbed the standpipe to the degree where you have lost the reserve function of the petcock. Most likely while changing the screen.

There's a little tube that you have to jamb up into the new petcock screen, there's a place
for it about halfway... it is a functional part of the reserve scheme... do you remember doing
that part?

Ida know about the choke... did you do one of the vacuum tests after the rebuild to insure
that the petcock is functioning properly (WRT flow/no-flow)?

I have seen the petcock standpipe develop a vertical linear crack, that allows enough gas thru for the Valk to run, although sometimes not very well. That could account for the choke issue if the fuel level was below the top of the standpipe and the petcock was turned to on, not reserve. I do not know why or how the crack develops, the crack is hard to see, looks like a fine line 1 to 2 inches long, running up and down, usually about the middle of the pipe. Good luck on finding the issue. Thanks Pete.

When I rebuild mine I got better milage and the shop didn't smell like fuel anymore. I went from 120 to 140 miles before hitting reserve because it was leaking fuel. It is critical to get the new screen and the reserve tube with the gasket inside installed correctly. Usually I can add 4.2 gallons shortly after it hits reserve regardless of milages. I don't know how working on the petcock would effect your choke.~TJ

Thanks everyone,  Lots to think about and look into.  Next time I get the gas down I will take the tank off and inspect the petcock and see what I have now that I have an idea what to look for.
Thanks for all the tips!

HDL is Honda direct line: http://www.hdlparts.com/
They have a parts fiche you can order from. The rebuild kit for the petcock is called a Cover Set. You will need to order the screen as well.

Some are putting an elec. shutoff on now to prevent hydrolock. No gas travels unless the key is on.
