Greetings from New Zealand. I have very recently purchased a 99 Valkyrie Interstate from SRK Cycles in Pennsylvania that is going to be shipped out to me in New Zealand. I can't wait. Unfortunately, the previous owner removed the original trunk emblem (the letters that spell VALKYRIE) and stuck on the word RAMROD. That's gotta go. I have sourced a brand new set of letters which will be sent with the bike. What I need to know for when I put the new letters on, what is the overall exact length from the top left of the V to the right side of the E, and also height from the bottom of the lid to the baseline of the emblem. Any dimensions that can be provided will be greatly appreciated, preferably in mm or cm.

Thanks

Antony from New Zealand

If you bought a new set, they are already properly spaced and ready to apply as the word VALKYRIE not individual letters. The Honda Fisch should give you enough detail to place them real close.

See #28

They are a half inch up from the bottom lid edge, and exactly ten inches from the top left of the V to the right side of the E. (man it's nippy out there this time of night)

After measuring in inches and seeing the perfection of measurement, I decided not to hurt my eyes trying to do the mm's  (assembled in Ohio you know).

I don't know how you're going to live without RAMROD.   Grin

EDIT:  I just did the math conversion and a half inch = 12.7mm, considerably less than 19.65.  I wasn't drunk with my tape measure, so I don't know why the disparity.

They are placed 19.65mm as measured from the bottom of the lid to the bottom of the letters.
This means there is a 19.65mm space below the letters. The word is centered using the lid lock key hole.

Maybe Jess or Avanti have had their Valkyrie's previous owner apply the letters 1/4" different from original?  If we get that measurement from a couple more people, we can confirm the distance from the bottom edge.  I would help, but I have a Tourer.

Maybe mine was applied on a Monday morning by a disgruntled employee!

I have two Interstates and the letters are the same on both;

10" wide from left of the V, to the right side of the E.
3/4" of an inch from the bottom of letters to the edge of the deck lid.

Just for shenanigans, I'm going to change the lettering on one of my trunk lids to read "Alky"...though I'm somewhat of a teetotaler.  uglystupid2

Looks like individual letters to me.
A quick google image search  of "Valkyrie Interstate trunk" shows me that.

Yes, they are individual letters centered under the key cylinder like said above.

I bought a set a few years back and they came just as Chris described, I will measure my 01 Interstate this evening and report back, I will also take a look at my 99 Interstate.

Note: They are individual letters, but they come already spaced with a backing that allows you to stick them on the trunk lid all at once. You just need the correct position on the trunk lid.

19.65mm is the average of each letter.
19.65mm=0.7736 inches - 0.75=0.0236 inches or 0.599mm very small margin of error.

OK, this baffled me because I'm certain mine are as original.

So I measured again, and low and behold, my letters are 10 inches wide (as before), but a half inch (plus one millimeter) from the lid edge on the left V, and 3/4 inch on the right E (they don't go up and down, they slightly go up evenly all the way across).  I have never perceived the crookedness, but it's there, science doesn't lie.  I'll bet the installers used a straight edge or a jig or something, and just laid it on crooked.

In Detroit, we used to joke about buying a new car made on Fridays (no joke, don't do it).  I don't know any jokes about Marysville OH.

What years of the I/S had the Valkyrie on the trunk?

I have a '99 and she came to me without the emblem on the trunk (I am the third owner).

Mine is also a 99, did they change from a 1 piece emblem to separate letters at some stage?

They all had the emblem.  Some don't like emblems.

The interstate trunk never came with the word Valkyrie connected.  They were always separate letters.  All of them had it, some were removed (like yours).  I posted that if you buy new, they are designed to be applied all at once not one letter at a time.

Hopefully this picture will clear up any confusion.  You peel off the strip that looks blue to expose the sticky backs of the letters, then stick it to the trunk all at once.  Last, remove the wider white strip that held all the letters together.

NOTE:  I have not installed this with this emblem, so there are likely better "how to" instructions.

I have a large size noggin, but that thing is too wide to get across my forehead.

So that's out.   Grin
