Jerry & Sherry Sheffer

Sarasota FL

« on: December 01, 2018, 11:42:30 AM »

Well, today we stayed in “PalmGhetto” as Christmas lights, timers and chords for the house was the needed task but before we got ripping on that I decided to take each Drifter out and stretch their legs.  I asked Sherry the age old question, do you want to take your bike out for a ride yet? She hasn’t yet and I usually don’t press the issue but I decided to today. Well after much discussion and also self examination she decided to not persue riding.  A few factors were, how happy she is as a passenger and a couple of items found as age is creeping up, yes John and a Grumpy it does start to hit around this time, none of this we are too young poo. So one Valk comes home and we will have the opportunity to do two up runs for coffee or whatever, and maybe take the 1500 Drifter up for the times Sherry is working and I can ride solo. I also might offer the 1500 Drifter for a high price and see where it goes and just keep one. High enough so it will not sell.  2funny Well I realize this had to be Sherry’s decision and I am satisfied that she has made the right choice.  I know some of you have had daughters or wives that struggle with the same decision and had to figure out the answer.  Sadly there was a younger couple that posted on the Drifter board that his wife went through the class got the license and a drifter and literally three months later she miss calculated a turn and ran off the road and was killed.  Tis the sport we love and can happen at anytime to anyone as we see on the gen board, but this chapter is closed and we move on.

Sherry, If you truly are not comfortable riding your own machine, I agree with you. Since you will still be coming along with Jerry most of the time, and we will all get to see you, it is all good.

After many years on back, my wife insisted on learning.  I taught MC riding on active duty and after, and she was certainly fit enough.  But I tried to talk her out of it because of the horrific traffic (it's an hour to good, safe, country riding).  But she didn't want to wait 15 years till retirement so off we go (250, 600, 800, 1100 ccs).  She became a basically competent rider, but was never going to be really good. She only ever rode with me as wing man.  When we split up, I offered for her to take her bike, but she didn't want it, and gave up riding, and I sold her bike.  We were both relieved.

Jerry, it can hit at any age, all depends on a person's comfort level when riding. I've had a few scares over the years that made me hesitate about getting back in the saddle, but I was satisfied with my own level of riding expertise so it didn't hold me back for long. I haven't reached the point where I'm ready to either give it up or convert to a trike, although I'll admit to giving a lot of thought to going with a trike kit. Then a couple days later I'm out on two wheels and buzzing around in heavy traffic and decide it isn't time yet. There's no shame in Sherry making that decision.  cooldude

Iris made that decision a few years ago now.  She got a Shadow 1100 on her birthday one year.  She had to shift going down to 35 mph in small towns where I on my 97 Tourer could just ease off on the throttle then throttle back up.  The Shadow didn't have enough torque without the downshifting.  We found her the standard in High Springs that eventually found it's way to Lesa and she was a happy camper.  But after some time passed she "lost her mojo" as she called it and just didn't feel comfortable.  It is a decision that I eventually made and has to be made on your own.
All is good as long as everyone concerned feels good with the outcome.

I see nothing wrong with Sherry’s decision.  At age 70, I’m not as strong as I used to be which was never very strong to begin with.  A couple of years ago I bought an older Goldwing trike and anytime my wife (Pam) goes with me, we take it.  After my accident last November, I feel more comfortable on the trike than on the Valk.  However, I’m not ready to give it up yet.  If I do, I will either go with a lighter bike or a Valk trike.  That’s my 2 cents worth.  Be safe all.

I have a similar situation, and I would never push the issue. We are very lucky to have such great gals.  smitten

So, how much is too much for this piece of art work drifter ?  ???

It has 6500 original miles and as you know a custom paint scheme.  So I doubt it is sellable for the investment.

My full support to sherry on making that choice, it's all good most importantly you still riding with jerry. Heck I got my wife to be my passenger once  for may be 30 min, she's completely indifferent but very supportive of my addiction.
