I was moving my Goldwing around in the garage today and much to my horror discovered a small pool of oil beside the rear tire on the right hand side . The bike is only 10 years old and admittedly has been ridden hard at times  angel but geez . I am now questioning the reliability of Honda's products tickedoff Turns out the oil was coming from the saddlebag lid damper . Cost for a damper is $68 Can +tax = $76 at the local stealer . On Ebay I found a pair for $8.99 USD . I am distraught that I have to spend all this money on a bike which is only 10 years old Angry . I am looking for a little sympathy here uglystupid2

Awwwww....poor, poor Steve  :'(
There...hows that?  With all those bikes and cars you have in that garage of yours it's surprising you don't find more little pools of oil every now and then. 2funny

I recall about 6 years ago when I walked into the garage in our old house and spotted (much to my shock & horror) a small pool of oil underneath the left/front side of the engine on the Valk. I literally started to shake and sweat with worry...how could this be?? It's a Honda!! It's a freekin' 1500 six for Pete's sake...1500 sixes don't leak!!! After I regained my composure and a little self control, I immediately went to the Tech Board and found out about the shifter seal issue, and was able to get a good night's sleep that evening knowing what a minor issue and easy repair it was. The MC shop in MR at the time actually had one in stock the next day and it's been good ever since (have since ordered a couple spares to keep on hand).

BTW...you probably damaged that damper this past June at Valhalla, where you thought you would be clever and "rest" your bike on its side so you could clean the underbelly  2funny

Hey Mike ... I feel better already after hearing about your shifter seal episode . You know I've stared at that picture of me washing the underbelly and still can't figure out who it was that snuck up and patted me on the behind  Shocked.

Glad you found the problem. My 1st thought was when did you buy a Harley? Then was also thinking of the drive shaft seal, except from where it was coming from.

I can't remember, but if you want to have it shipped to Blaine, I'll pick it up. I'm sure I can get it to Kelowna once a month (the guy was just there Mon-Tue, so next year). If it's only $9, then it might be worth buy a few of them.

We go to the UBC Kelowna campas for collection of the data from the machines, there for about 1 hour, and usually spends the night at the Sandman hotel in town. He always teases me that he's tired of the drive, and next month he'll let me go.

With the snow last week, 14", and another 2' today on the Coq, he didn't even drive down to Penticton and back.

I had a massive oil leak from my bike after changing the oil once. The seal from the old oil filter stuck to the engine. Two seals is not better than one.

I was out for a ride about two weeks ago. I only got about 6 km and the falling snow forced me to turn back home. I am going to try again this weekend.

I had the same thing happen on my new to me GW GL1500 about 5 years ago at our annual maintenance day. Found the leak when I started it back up, bought another Honda filter ($20 ea), removed, and found the second seal. I just went ahead and keep the original one on the bike, and saved the OEM for next years change.

Now I always look at the filter after removing it.

Also the same kind of problem with the exhaust gaskets. The o-rings crush and stay in the cylinder head. Remove with a pick or small screw driver.

I did the same thing on a John Deere 4650 tractor doing oil changes before harvest when I was a teenager. Fired up the tractor and it shot oil out between the 2 seals...all over the grain truck windshield. Couldn’t see out of that damn windshield all harvest no matter how many times I cleaned it.  Roll Eyes

Beardo .... Was that the same harvest that people were reporting suspicious  crop circles and possible alien landings?  2funny
