Nut Cage Mod-Question
«
on:

I have done the mod on my bike, but getting ready to help my son install a car tire on his Valk. Can anyone tell me the thread size/pitch for the square nuts. I plan to use the stock bolts with a lock nut in place of the caged square nut. If his tire is too wide, I will go with a carriage type bolt from the inside, but hope we can get away with using what is there.

A carriage bolt is usually a grade three bolt. I use a grade eight bolt installed from the inside with a hardened washer. Over kill , yes. Future problems ,no. I start with a full thread bolt that is to long and tighten a nut and washer on it. I then measure the thread left. Now , buy a bolt with an unthreaded shank the length you need and cut off the extra. I do it after installing. This method has the bags or rails on an unthreaded shank. Make sure the bolt tightens.

The front bolt size is 10mm X 1.25 pitch. The smaller bolt is 8mm X 1.25 pitch.

I just used the square nut, its larger than a standard hex nut and you already have them. The nut cage is really the only part that would rub a tire. I used the square nut because they don't spin when tightening the fender support bolt. I remove the lower section of the fender for tire changes. My .02

I was able to do the "washer mod" to prevent the car tire form rubbing with good results.

When I saw "Nut Cage" I thought this was going to be a post about cars...
