I gassed up the snowblower and made sure it started. Thankfully it did. Fireplace wood caddy is stacked and ready. Plenty of food and booze in the house. Let it snow, except we're probably going to get an ugly mess of precipitation at my house. Hope everybody weathers it with no problems.  |

I'm actually a little excited to try out my snowblower project. My 1986 (I think) John Deere 1032 was tired. It never threw snow very far, so I added heavy rubber pieces to two opposing impeller blades (home grown impeller kit), which about doubled the throw, but the old Tecumseh was tired and had a significant amount of blow-by. Rather than buy a new blower of questionable quality, I rebuilt mine. I took it apart and replaced the impeller bushing and pulley. Replaced a bunch of small parts, and replaced the engine with a Robin/Subaru 14HP OHV engine. Increased the impeller drive pulley diameter. Required a few other mods, but we'll see if it lives up to my expectations. Should be a good test. Expecting an icy, heavy mess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bHD3ZtlT9c |

TV news desk guy said there was a rush on at grocery store for the mandatory staples such as bread, water, milk and Allen's Coffee Brandy.  Myself, I fueled up the John Deere a couple days ago. Since the weather guessers are saying that Monday will be cold for clean up, I pulled my bag of heated MC gear out of the closet. (John Deere has a 12V plug) |

It's going to be snow here for a couple more hours, before temps rise drastically and freezing rain
moves in....then will eventually change back over to snow.
It is 2* now, will be in the mid 30's by late afternoon, then dropping back to single digits
later on this evening.
Short ribs and all the fixin's about ready to go in the crock pot....
Snowblower all ready to play in the snow....
Plenty of beer & wine to last us a while....
Generator all set.....
Set back and enjoy the day............

Got out early and cleaned up by about 9:00. Six inches of snow and ice pellets. Very dense, heavy stuff. Thank God for the snow blower. Ice pellets are still coming down. When it stops, I'll get out and do the final cleanup. |

Just finished with driveway....probably 10 plus inches on the ground,
with the bottom 8 inches being snow and the top 2 inches is well mixed with
grains of ice, resembling granulated sugar.
Snowblower had fun throwing this stuff out of the way....
Not sure what the remaining storm will bring.....
Temps started at 2* this morning, and it is now 10*....this snow should be fluffy and powdery !!!
Time to check on the short ribs in the crockpot, and pour a gin n tonic.

We are cleaned up and our short ribs and shanks are braising in the oven. We have ice coming down now and will go out to salt later. Cocktails were just poured  |

Good luck with that machine.After years of buying older Ariens snowblowers and rejuvinateing them I finally broke down and bought a new one last year. I bought a new ariens 24 wide with a hi output motor 17 lbs thrust.It has all the bells and whistles. The best of which is the power steering, limited slip differential,all you have to do is apply slight pressure to one grip and it turns without effort.It blows snow slush and water. I also added a cab to keep the snow from blowing back at you.No regrets here even tho the enitial cost was substantial.

Well, my snowblower project exceeded my expectations. Now I want to see what it does with a foot of actual snow. What I ended up with was 3-4 inches of nearly solid ice/slush mix, and it continued to drop sleet, ice, and snow for hours yesterday. My wife took a couple videos, from the warmth of the living room, of course. The original version of that John Deere would have been plugging the chute every 30 feet, but this version never missed a beat. Even the very densely packed bank from the town plows was chewed through pretty handily.
At first, I had intended to rebuild the Tecumseh, but the Subaru engine was so inexpensive, I had to try to modernize it a bit and see what it could do.

Subaru had good small engines that were used in many products. BUT the small engine division was bought out by Yamaha. Not that it is a bad thing I just thought I would pass the info along. Yamaha wanted back in the small engine game and now you will see Mowers, Z Turns, Blowers and such powered by Yamaha in place of Subaru. At first, I had intended to rebuild the Tecumseh, but the Subaru engine was so inexpensive, I had to try to modernize it a bit and see what it could do. |

Have a Subaru engine in the Gravely lawn mower that I bought summer 2015. So far, so good. |

We had an additional 2 to 3 inches of a crust / ice combination
that fell late yesterday afternoon / last night / this morning.
We had to chop it with metal shovels first before using the snowblower....
As the snowblower simply wanted to ride over the top and not get down to the asphalt.....
All ready for substantial rains and temps in the 40's mid week......

Video coming eventually. Wife in bed with the flu. We live in the sticks, so when she sends me the video, we'll have to wait for the correct combination of WIFI, 3g/4g, and native American smoke signals before it uploads to me.
Since Subaru was exiting the small engine business, that's why the engine was so cheap. Wouldn't have bought it at the original price.
