I had them on a car I used only for gettin' to and from work ( I work in 8 states ) ...They got torn off along with the hood ,grill and bumper when I hit a deer on I-40 while rollin' about 80 mph. IMO they are snake oil and a waste of chrome money .

Researchers wondered if they were at a frequency that the deer could hear, and if they did, would they only elicit a WTF response or what? They concluded that they were also snake oil.
The freakin deer will do as they d@mn well please, even if it means getting killed by a vehicle.

The previous owner of my Valk put a set of those things on it. Being a shift worker, I ride alot at night and I see ALOT of deer on the sides of the road.
Trust me on this.....they DON'T work.

Read the articles (see trailing links) and supporting articles, each with a range of support data from 1990 to 1989 to 2002 kind of out dated. The discussions center around wind activated deer whistles and their effects above 30 mph. none of the articles address the electronic deer whistle operating in the frequency range as the Hornet Deer Whistle. Deer-Whistle Ineffective, Says Bioacoustics Researcher - November 18, 2002 http://advance.uconn.edu/2002/021118/02111812.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer_hornOn a personal Note I would concur with the report as it pertains to wind activated whistles, from my personal experiments with deer whistles over the last five years. I would like to point to the most reliable deer whistle I have found that has proven to be effective for my co-riders/friends and me. From personal experience would concur with this statement (within the limits of my use over the last 5 years) from web site: http://www.xp3hornet.com/ The Hornet Electronic Deer Avoidance System, used with driver awareness, will reduce your risk of hazardous animal/vehicle collision by more than 70%. I highly recommend the Hornet electronic whistle. The trailing web site has the Hornet Deer Whistle for sale or you may find it on Ebay and other places. I have had them on my previous Goldwings and am in the process of putting one on my New to me 99, Valkyrie. It dosen't do anything for other animals but we have watched many deer over my 80K miles of ridding turn and walk into the woods, and without it had them turn and run in front of me. https://www.homeproductsnmore.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=70&click=1281I recommend addition of a switch to turn it off and on manually. I mounted it on the front left side of my GL1800 just under the cowling pointed down at 45 deg. angle; trying to figure where I want to put it on my Valkyrie. There are 5 of us in our club using these in central Louisiana we believe in them because we have rode with out them and with them, bottom line they have been effective for us. Would not say any deer whistle is 100% but the odds are much better when used with driver awareness, I believe it has reduced my risk of deer/vehicle collisions. Jim __________________

Yes.... those dang Deer Whistles don't work..... I tried whistling to this one to come closer and he just looked at me. He has been hanging around the back yard (with his lady friends and kids)..... too bad it's not legal to hunt him here in the hood. I might have to take up Archery and get me a Crossbow.....

This also works well for scaring and getting rid of pesky forest rats. A 3-9x40 scope enhances it abilities and effectiveness for long distance usage.

I have heard a story that auto bump shops get a good laugh in doing body repair work on cars from deer hits (in high risk areas). If you had a deer whistle in front that was damaged in the strike, your insurance will buy you a new one.

I think they are a joke. Even if they make a noise the deer can hear, that doesn't mean that it will invoke a response to run away from the road and out of your way. I have hit deer two different times with one of my work trucks. Each time it happened it was with all the emergency lights flashing, two sirens blaring and multiple application of REALLY loud grover air horns. Bottome line, if they don't run from a fire truck making all the noise it can possibly make, (which is ALOT of noise) some stupid little plastic doo-hickey isn't going to work.

I once received a "Anti Bug" whistle for the Valk from someone to try out. Glad I didn't pay for it. It probably does a dandy job of giving the bugs some music before they splat.
PS: Dave's post says it all.

I'm with Pitbull... These also help deter CPLDS ( Cell Phone Lane Drift Syndrome) Deer are probably my biggest road hazard concern in these parts. Tagged one earlier this year... in my truck
