Hi all, I’m a little confused about the issue with the pet rooster and hydro lock. How will a leaking fuel tap cause a hydro lock. The Pinole tap is on off so if you have to turn it off isn’t it the same as turning the OEM tap to off. Have the carbs not got overflow. I like the idea of an electric shut off solenoid.
Just interested as to why this happens .
Thanks

You are correct, if you forget to turn the Pingel off it's as bad as a broken OEM. However, if you turn it off it's off. You can't always say that about the OEM. When diaphragms fail they can allow fuel flow in any setting with or without vacuum.

There also has to be a faulty float/ needle valve to complete the phenomenon.

The main problem when diaphragms start to fail is not hydrolock, it's fuel starvation and possible stranding on the road.

If you turn off the OEM petcock its off just like the Pingel ! So why change , just turn it off if you like.

This is the problem. It takes more than a faulty petcock to cause hydro lock. My ‘97 has its stock (ie the one that came on it) and it still functions properly. No I do not turn it off unless it will sit for weeks.

If the diaphragms are failing the stock petcock can flow gas in the off position. I have seen it and there are plenty of reports of guys riding many miles on an off OEM petcock. So, it’s not like the Pingel.

+1 as Jeff stated, it takes 2 things for a hydro lock to occur. But with 6 carbs, we have a higher % chance of it happening. I warn all new owners of this, not to scare them, but to save them from breaking their engines.

However, there is a more rare method when the diaphragm tears and allows fuel to leak down the vacuum line to the intake, and flood that cylinder (usually #6).

I've a OEM petcock that when turned off, still supplies fuel to the carbs. I've ridden more than 15 min @ 70MPH with the petcock off, and no signs of fuel starvation.

I'm not afraid of it. But I am VERY aware of the noise I can expect to hear when a hydro lock occurs, and how to clear it SAFELY if/when it happens. I expect to fix it this year, and keep the vacuum OEM petcock.

Scroll down to see what it can do if you press the starter a second time after hearing that Thud sound.

The off position is not part of the diaphragm system, its just a 3 way ball valve that the seat has worn out on.  This can also happen on any valve including the Pingel  valve. Take it a part. I have … thought I could replace the oring seat but its not replaceable, same on the Pingel valve; just a wear item like any valve.

and...

In Response To: Another hydrolock question (G-Man (Gary in NY))

this is from Rider mag sept 1988 about the '88 goldwing Gl1500.
they had the hydro-lock problem and it turned out to be the bowl vent hose was sagging. "the low spotfills with gas and prevents air circulation, much like a sink trap. without a connection to atmosphere, the float bowls pressurize and raw fuel is forced up and out of the carbs through the needle jet. From there gravity takes the fuel down the intake runners. if that cylinder has an open intake valve, hydrolock." "The article states that honda issued a Product Update kit on a fix in feb of that yr which included a metal air-vent pipe and a vacuum fuel valve."
Looking at the service manual pics in the carb section it shows the vent hoses as straight sections just laying loosely on top of other hoses. My 98's vent hoses have a 90 degree end. the end is installed into holes in the rear carb support frame.
So this might be the reason and cause of the problem for some bikes.

uglystupid2  no snap balls in the Pingel. If you like the OEM more power to you. Many do. The Pingel is a higher quality piece of equipment and any amount of arguing is just so much denial. Too each his own

Would like to see pics of the inside of a Pingle. I think that I read that rebuild kits for them are available. What is included in that?

Thanks all, so the OEM will fail open. The carbs haven’t got overflow so if a float valve fails bingo. Got it.
The reason I ask was because I also have a Boss Hoss. They , well mine has a Pingel from new and I’ve heard of Boss Hoss having the same issue. Guess an electric shut off would be the way to go.
Cheers

most carbs, as these do, do have a bowl over flow.

Pingel will rebuild your petcock for $18-$20. I just had mine done on my '98 Std.
