Doing a Desmog on my 98 Standard. All of the emmision control stuff is in the way. Has anyone permanently removed this system? Just some vacuum lines and a canister.

Or is it more efficient to leave it intact when I am finished?

When I have talked to those desmogging their California bikes they are removing all Emission related parts.  When visiting Attic Rat in Tulsa he was working on a performance upgrade on a California bike and there were extra mods to the carbs that needed to be done as they are different than the rest of the USA models.

I'm sure more will post regarding the California emission desmog.

The best desmog is to remove everything you can (see our Shop Talk).

But the easiest is to pull things apart and plug them up.

Even though our bikes are getting old, if I lived in CA, before I pulled everything off, I'd take a close look at emissions testing rules out there to make sure some asswipe G people don't require everything to be in OE stock position to pass emissions testing.  (In which case, it may be better to leave it all there, and just unhook it and plug it up, so it looks stock on casual observation)

And never ever go to dealers for emissions testing.

Go to people who nothing whatsoever about motorcycles.  (same for safety inspections)

Thanks for the responses. No emmisions testing for motorcycles in CA. And no indication there will be in the future. But, I like the idea of leaving the parts in place and plugging.

When you say attic rat says more mods to carbs?
Can you elaborate?
I'm  now doing desmog on my new to me 97 bumblebee and previous owner had unhooked most hoses and it ran really good. I was really confused when I pulled air cleaner and seen the mess.
I'm now kinda going slow before I finish it up. Looking for more info.
I think I have everything figured out except the 2 hoses hanging with end open hanging from both carb banks.
Any help would be great.

I have a California model and I used the Shiny kit that is sold by a vender on this website to desmog. I removed everything not related to the carbs, including the canister underneath the bike by the kickstand. I also installed a manual Pingle fuel shut off valve and capped off every vacuum nipple on every intake runner. Super clean on top of the motor now and no worries about vacuum leaks. I did not install an electric shut off valve like some. I'm old school so my routine is key on, fuel on, key off , fuel off. Works for me, and for me one less thing that can go wrong!

I desmogged a California bike. I had 3 ports to plug on each carb. I also remember that I had two 3/8" lines that I had to leave open. They ran to each carb bank and met in the middle. If I plugged them it didn't run right.  I think it's a vent line.

Did the desmog and removed everything for the emissions system. Left the OEM petcock with vacuum to Carb 6 (new hose). Left the 2 large ports that swivel open. Not sure what they actually do.

Put the whole thing back together and did a short test start (exhaust is off for replacement). Both front cylinders were not firing. Grrrrr

Found the lead to the coil popped off. Bike starts and runs fine for just the few seconds I ran it.

Can't rely on my memory to turn petcock off. I have 2 FI bikes. Causes me to forget. So will deal with that later.

Thanks for all of the input.

The memory game to play with petcock shutoff, is to remember to reach down on both sides of the bike, and turn off the key (right) and petcock (left) at the end of the day's riding.  If you pull your key (you should), that should also remind you.  Tie key turns to petcock in your head (on/off?).

Or put a (low tech) sign on the garage door to remind you.   Smiley

Go to shop talk,
find: Removing the Smog
when that opens click on:
