I walked out into my garage last night and the lights were out, but the overhead door was open. So I turned on the lights and hit the button to close the door... holy crap! I had two owls in the garage that took flight when the door startled them! I'm not sure who was startled more me or them.
It took me a while to chase them out they seemed confused and were banging around on the walls, ceiling and shelves.

You got that right! Joanne came out to see, she said "they are so cute!" Till they took flight, then she went for the door! Those birds have some big wings!

We had one of those snatch a pidgeon out of the air...but he didn't plan his follow though very well as he then promptly crashed through our bedroom window. This was in the middle of the night...in the middle of a sound sleep.

Blood. Flying glass. Feathers. Billowing curtians. Adrenaline.

Between the wife's screams and the caterwauling of the Maine Coon I got a VERY good test of my heart that evening.

I damn near shot him...as in...damn near emptied two 1911 A-1 Colt 45's into him...that would have not been a good thing LOL!

Sitting on my dresser his wings overhung both sides of it...a good 4 or more feet total.

Blogged it...

Tom your childhood memory has probably embellished the owl's wing noise. Most owls are silent flyers because of special feathers they have and are near silent when they fly. Of course a foot from your ear there gonna sound supersonic.

I should say I kinda like owls... I post a picture tonight maybe.

You may very well be right because I didn't hear anything until he was right on top of me and starting to flap his wings hard to regain altitude.  I think I must have wondered too close to a nest or something.

I was bow hunting once and had been sitting in my tree for quite some time when all of a sudden a big WHOOSH of air came blasting down on top of me! A big owl had launched from that same tree, I never heard him, I don't know if he was up there the whole time or where he came from but I was amazed at how quiet those huge wings were.

......that is just too cool....I love nature...and living up here in Northern Michigan, Ive seen alot of it...we were up at pictured rocks up in the UP once visitng Chili,s sister....I had just bought my digital camera and we were mulling around at this look out over Lake Superior....all of a sudden a HUGE..golden eagle went quietly soaring by.....right benaeth us ! ....I along with everyone else was stunned....this beautiful bird must have had a wing span of at least 7 feet ! . . ....I started fumbling with my camera that I was not all used to using...and by the time I got it turned on and it "woke up"........he was gone..

.....that is a cool shot you have there though.....reminds me of that scene in ...My Cousin Vinny....when he comes running out of that cabin in the middle of the night...because a screech owl outside is screaming....he emptys the gun...shooting in all directions....looks around in the quietness....goes back in....the little screech owl looks around....and starts screaming all over..  Cool

....below is a shot I took a few years ago...the DNR puts road kill,s in the same spot every year to help the local Eagle population get through the harsh winters...

I've been having a different kind of home invasion lately.  Racoons!

At first it wasn't a big deal, my two dogs are large but incredible docile and non-aggressive.

The Raccoon. ( I believe it was only one at 1st) Would come into my workshop through the dogie door and help themselves to the dry dog food. I assume it is a raccoon because they are washing the food in the dogs water bowl.

I buy the big 40-50 pound bags and store it in a large Tupperware container with a flip up lid. My dogs do not gulp their food, they never have. One will nibble all day, the other will eat a larger portion at night, but they never scarf food unless it is dogie bones or table scraps.

Well the other night the raccoon brought his family, and friends and they devoured at least 15 pounds of food and not missing a single nugget on the floor.  They did leave me about 1/2 a cup in the bottom of the container.

I think they tried to get the container out the dogie door but it is way too big for that.

I have now relocated my girls food and water in the garage which is on the other side of the house so hopefully the raccoons will not find it there.  If so I will have to get some traps from animal control to capture them.

I don't want to harm them but they are going to have to learn some manners and share or go away.

Frogs, yes, mice, no.
Lots and lots of tree frogs.
But since its still hot out, the mice are still outside.

That is  a Screech Owl...they don't get very big....we see them all the time here in Va., I was cooking on the grill one winter nite in a snow storm, when I was done I put the lid on the grill to cool it down.....alittle later I stepped outside and sitting on the handle, keeping warm was a Screech Owl, he never moved, he was determined to stay warm.... One of my best memories as a kid are from taking our Eagle Scout city cousin to our old silo to see the great Horned Owl that lived in the top of the silo chute(like a wooden elevator shaft up the side of the 30' silo) The cousin proceeded to climb up to get a closer look at him and then was properly bombed. Scared owls can secrete a large volume of white noxious liquid s*#$. He got covered head to toe. Our family still laughes about it 35 years later.

Depends on how close they are. I had a BFO, think it was a horned owl buzz me when I was walking in from bow hunting in the dark. I dont know it he saw something on me and changed his mind when he got close, but I heard the wings cutting the air.

Was riding home after an evening shift on my motorcycle. Beautiful summer evening. Look up the road and there is a 2 ft tall barn owl sitting on the fence just down the street. I look down for a sec and the damn thing is now 10 ft tall with 20 ft wingspan. Well, thats what it looked like as it went over my head about 6 inches. He was chasing some of the moths in my headlight.

years ago.  I have a similar picture.  It was just sitting up there staring down.  Left it alone and it finally took off.  We hear them all the time.  Sounds like a woman screaming.  Scary if you don't know they are around.

My uncle has a house with a steep roof and a very high peak...almost like an A-frame, but not really.  His main door is directly under the peak.  Well, one morning, he comes out and sees a little pile of bones right by the door.  He thinks, "That's odd"  but since we live out in the country with lots of critters running around, didn't give it too much thought.  But then the next day, there's another pile of bones...then another and another.  This went on for awhile and he couldn't figure out why some animal was leaving him a present of dead bones at his front door on an almost daily basis.  Well, one night he comes home late and just happens to notice something up on his roof.  Here was this huge owl just perched up there like he owned the place.  He figures this owl was sitting up there eating his dinner every night and then just tossing the bones on the floor for him to clean up.  Eventually, the owl must have moved on.  But it was pretty funny while it lasted.

Definitely Screech Owls. And judging from your description, Daniel, plus size and range, yours was most likely a Great Horned Owl. Maybe short or long-eared, both of which have a wing span around 3 feet but the Great Horned has a wing span around 44 inches and is the most common owl in Texas. I like owls.  Cool

Err...or maybe I coulda read yer story FIRST before opening my big mouth...lol. Barn owls have very distinctive faces.
