Just thought Id share the design in case any of you want to fly a 3x5 flag for something like a Patriot Guard mission.  Thats what I use it for, we have a mission tomorrow.  PVC, some nuts and bolts and wooden piece I made from scraps and a bungee.....and it works great

remove the ball

attach the end thinggy

The rubber grommet lets it move a bit without cracking

screw in the tube that holds the flag pole

strap in the brace

Thats the mount

Then the Flag

Looks a little light weight for Highway use. Looks like it would work well at parade speeds though.

Kinda parinoid about flying flags on bikes. Many don't realize the forces that are at work when you hit highway speeds. Aerodynamically, twice the speed = 4 times the force. Add the wind and what you thought might work is snapped like twig. (or in my case, bent like a pretzel)

So to solve that...
I had a custom made assembly that bolts on to the luggage rack. 2pc. metal black pipe for staff.
Fly a Tough Tex (heavy canvas) flag 3X5 at Interstate speeds. Worked with fabricator to design it for Highway speed use. Staff is machined so that I can attach it to 1/2" conduit for 10' flag pole. (3  2ft sections with compression fittings + black pipe staff) All fits in the saddlebag.

Do escorts with PGR which is why this is of an interest.

I only attach the flag when escorting at low speed (max 35mph or so).  On the highway its just the pole

Same here.  Here's a pic of mine in New Orleans earlier this month.  The flags are only attached after getting to the place where the escort starts and taken off, folded up and put in the saddlebags before leaving the mission.

Yes, the Red & Whites look particularly good when flying flags.   cooldude   I've got one more flag I'm going to run, the 3x2 PGR Flag.  My flag poles are made from closet rods I picked up from Lowes.  I've put eyebolts through the rods and the flags are snap linked on.

Well as long as we're showing our mounts, here's mine.
Started with 2 adjustable flag mounts, attached with "zip ties":

Drilled hole through ant mounts and attached 2 3/4 conduit clamps:

Poles are 3/4 plastic pipe with 3/4 oak dowel rod inside, 5&1/2 foot long:

Complets project has been road tested to 90 mph:
