It is cancerous...didn't want to hear that. I asked if it was the more aggressive type...yes! He then told me so much so that he wants a bone scan to make sure it hasn't traveled into the bones. Once that's determined, it will dictate the amount and level of radiation treatment which he stated he's 99.9% sure it can be contained in that manner. The radiation he spoke of would be daily for two months, I told him I can't do that due to caring for my wife 24/7. Only time available at the moment is twice a week when a lady we pay for ourselves comes in for 2-3 hrs. and does nothing but babysit.

I asked about surgery such as Bruce experienced recently and was told at my age they won't do it. When pressed for the real reason, he said physical strength and incontinence are major issues. I offered to take him to my gym for a workout with me(he's in his mid-40's)....he got the message on the "strength" issue. I then told him I'll wait for the results of the bone scan before making the decision on going for a second opinion. With surgery at least I wouldn't have to leave home every day for a couple hours and could continue with the majority of my home duties....albeit a bit inconvenient at times.

Well John, I wish I were close so I could help you out with day to day stuff. From here, what I can offer is prayers for no travel into the bones, and good results from treatment.

John,

Have y'all discussed the possibility of the 'robotic' removal of the prostate (that's what I had done)? Far less invasive than the traditional surgery, and it can work, as it did in my case. If that has already been ruled out, then I'm at a loss...

As for the scan checking to see if it has spread, that appears to be fairly routine... I had that also. Prostate cancer, particularly the aggressive type, apparently can spread differently than other forms... The cells, I was told, like to spread through the bloodstream and 'hide out' in bone tissue. An area of concern turned up in my case, that proved to be something else from old trauma to the bones.

What all you're being told seems very familiar to me! All except the part about no surgery... I was fearful myself, because I'd heard 70 was the cutoff for surgery, which would have left me out. Turns out that robotic thing is considered 'outpatient surgery', as the patient is kept overnight following the operation, then released the next morning to go home. I don't know how that might have gone had I been 80...

Folks have different reactions, and the effects vary from person to person. My take on the robotic version is that it involves a couple of small incisions, a Foley catheter that must be worn for 8-10 days, and diapers for a couple of months afterward. Some pain the day of surgery, in my case, but nothing much to speak of afterward. A few follow-up visits afterward, but all things considered, it really was a quite tolerable deal from start to finish... Well, except for all the worry and anxiety, the inconvenience, and the 'wet-ness'.

Your experience seems to be so close to the one I've just gone through, it's as though we'd both been handed the same script! I truly hope yours has the same 'ending'! Remember, as Deten8tor told me early-on, "Most men die with this disease, but not because of it..." I do wish you well, my friend... If you'd like to chat, just let me know, and we can make arrangements...

John, so sorry to hear that. Our commander of my chapter of the Korean War veterans had prostate cancer and it has been successfully treated so far.  He had no surgery just treatments and is about 89 years old. He's doing ok now.

Also, my 78 year old brother-in-law had the radiation pellets treatment for the same and he's also doing ok, after about five years.

At any rate, you are on my prayer list. I pray that everything will work out for you and Rita.

John,

I'm very sorry to hear this news. I was hoping for something a bit rosier.

However, Bruce's post of his experience is certainly a bright spot!

Here's to the robot!

Sorry for the bad news.  I wish you the best.

One Word:  Cannabis Oil

(I know, that's 2 words)

My Son's girlfriend's Mom has stage 4 lung cancer, she has gotten Chemo, but they have also been treating her with Cannabis Oil.  Last scans the tumors had all but disappeared.  The doctor told them whatever you're doing, keep doing it.

Let me know if you want more info.

Damnit.... I'm still looking forward to finally meeting you, so you need to fight this!

Side question for you and DDT (And anyone else that wants to chime in) - How was this discovered? Did you go to the doctor complaining of something, or was there some exam that caught it? Just wondering as I get closer to 50 and those things start becoming more of an issue if I need to add something to my Laser Pat memorial checklist of things to get done...

It is admirable that your first concern was your wife and your 24/7 care for her being interrupted.  My father-in-law (85 at the time), my good friend neighbor (81 at the time) and one of my best friends from college have all had prostate cancer and all have recovered after treatment.  You will as well.  There are other doctors who may be more open to the robotic treatments.

May God bless you in your battle. angel

research testosterone levels and estrogen levels how they start to be converted in our 50s to bad forms that attack/affect the prostate.  one thing maintain 50-100mgs of zinc daily.  there are different types some absorb better than others. maintain good ration of omega 3 to omega 6 fats. there aremany herbal supplements that work and keep men healthy better than saw palmetto. SP can lower cholesterol which the body needs to make testosterone to keep the prostate healthy.
also research how the psa test really means nothing and is used to scare men into getting a biopsy which actually leads/causes cancer. search what Dr williams has stated and the doctor who created the psa test. he has stated he wished he never developed it.

Serk....everyone is different but here is some GENERAL info....usually starts with PSA (bloodwork) and DRE (digital rectal exam)  at a young age (45-50?) to see where you are at and establish a baseline of sorts.....

https://healthbeatblog.com/2010/03/the-doctor-who-invented-psa-test-calls-it-a-profitdriven-public-health-disaster-why-this-is-good-new/
My dr. told me he never hangs his hat on a single PSA test results. What he does watch for is if it increases and if it's at an accelerated rate. That usually indicates something is haywire. Up until a year ago he was only seeing me once a year and the PSA was steady at 3+ for years. Then it suddenly jumped just over 2 pts. between visits so he had me come back in two months, at which time it had jumped another 2+ pts. Two months later another 2+ pts. so now he's concerned.....nearly 10 pt. jump in less than six months. He still didn't dive in until I had an MRI which did show an "area of concern." Next came the biopsy which had to be put off due to gall bladder removal in January, but was accomplished last week. Yesterday is when I got the results and if it's contained in the prostate he only wants to do radiation. However, the final decision on treatment is TBD.

John....ask your doc about radioactive seeding. My story was similar to yours in that my PSA jumped up all of a sudden. They did a bone scan and all kinds of xrays, etc t o determine whether it had spread. The biopsy showed cancer in 3 of the 4 quadrants of the prostate. They said I could have radiation treatments...long and drawn out, removal...which they said was a last resort, and seeding. I opted for the seeding...one day outpatient procedure and done. This was in 2012...my PSA has been .001ish for all these years. Good luck with whichever procedure you choose.

John....here's a "one and done" clinical trial story that appears to have had good results.  Not sure if it is still available here or in your particular neck of the woods from another provider.  This is the quickest and possibly the easiest course of treatment for PC I've seen anywhere.  Article is from 2017 I believe.

here is a good article of how and why we get cancer. the doctors answer is great read about the incorrect ration btwn amino acids. bottom line we need more gelatin in our diets to correct the ratio.  There are some recent studies out there about gelatin and cancer.

LB, he knows I most likely will seek at least a 2nd opinion. I have a bone scan scheduled next Thursday and the results followup shortly thereafter. If I question his decision then, I'll look elsewhere. I may return to him but only after seeing other doctors.

I'm definitely staying on top of it and so is the dr., he's been pushing me a bit recently and I understand why. This was a rough week actually. The day I found out I had this cancer, although unknown to what level yet, was also the 13th anniversary of losing the first of two daughters to cancer. It hit me as I was walking back out to my car, was a bit overwhelming and had to sit there for a few minutes to gather myself. I'm sure it will end well but that first piece of info hits rather hard.
