Well, I received the $15 fuel petcock from China today.   The packaging wasn't much, but adequate to get it to me in one piece.

The castings look good, and the switch feels positive and secure, the screen mesh seems to be the same grade as the original.

So I open the back and see they have simplified the design. They have done away with the two diaphragm design and used a single diaphragm for the fuel cutoff and vacuum side, so there is no intermediary space and no weep hole. While this will work just fine, if the diaphragm ever rips the fuel goes straight to the number six cylinder via the vacuum hose, no leaking weep hole to alert you. I believe parts from a Valkyrie cover set could be used in it. In the vacuum cap they have eliminated the most troublesome part of the Valkyrie petcock, the ball valve which tends to stick and the bypass port to plug up, hold a vacuum  and cause fuel to flow when the motor is off. While they have eliminated this problem, it also means that there is no delay from the engine vacuum to the fuel shutoff diaphragm  and every change in vacuum is immediately expressed on the diaphragm, excessive back and forth, no delay,  I don't like it.

The switch side opens up which I like and it is rebuild-able although it may be a bit hard to get on O-ring seated for the cover. I don't think you would ever have any leak through in the off position as it is a positive position click.

I think this is a serviceable petcock for temporary or spare use, but the lack of sophistication of the vacuum side gives me a problem for long term usage.  FIfteen bucks,,,,  well worth it, but not as cool as the original.

Thank you for the review. Do you think it might be rebuildable with the parts from the OEM one, make it a Frank-N-stein of the 2.

The next time I have the tank off I will see what can be done, but the way the main body is designed and cast, it seems unlikely you could use all the parts to turn it into a dual diaphragm.
Since the cap with the valve is the main problem with the original, but in my opinion, an important part of the design for longevity, putting that on the Chinese valve would give you a new selector switch end if that was a problem with your original. You would still have a single diaphragm petcock.  Best solution is to keep the original in good condition and keep the ball and leak down port in the cap clear and clean.

Any pictures of the other side of the petcock with the cover off? I guess the filter is ethanol proof?

I meant the selector side with that cover off showing the selector ball and o-rings.

The lack of the dampener in the vacuum port will shred that diaphragm in VERY short order. The Valk was a wicked intake pulse (which is the point of the dampener) and will rattle that diaphragm ruthlessly.

I also ordered one of those to see what it was (hey, for 15 bucks, worth a look, right) and mine had a substantial amount of casting sand inside the petcock...

There is a picture like that a few posts up, right under where I said,

 is it not showing up?

No sand in the one I received Daniel, but an over abundance of light silicone lube.

My petcock used to be a strong and faithful instrument.

Now a $15 replacement seems reasonable.

My first thought is if that was the problem and they couldn't be displayed by the forum,  I couldn't see them either??

When that becomes a great concern Jess, I've heard they have a pill for that.   Grin   Grin

Yeah Ponch, about 15yo, a neighbor gave me one to try out. (not that I needed it, but you know, curiosity)

Man, that thing worked.

It was pretty humorous when I entered the bedroom with my bike half helmet fully supported.  (look, no hands) Grin
