Hello,
I need to replace the rear tire on a interstate, we always ride two up and was wanting to go over sized. What (if any) is the largest mc tire without any mods?
I was looking at a 200/60vr16.

I haven't tried that tire. But I've used many 205 car tires with no problems. I think you'd be fine.

The stock tire size 180-70 is a LARGE tire for a motorcycle. I seem to remember those that tried the 200 size didnt like it. I ride two up lots and even on Deals gap the stock size was just fine.  |

I agree with Chrisj; just have enough pressure in it, and it will be fine. Even pulling a 700+ pound trailer (same as a 150-170 pound passenger) I had no issues.

Some guys have run a 200 Metzler (and maybe others). The word was they wore out quicker than 180s.

I ran a 200, Fat Freddie, as it was known, by Avon. I tried it for the “look” and was interested to see if the ride would change ect. I liked the look and the ride didn’t suffer but the tire was done after about 7000 miles. I wondered if the short life was due to the possibility of not keeping a close enough check on tire pressure, I’m not sure. But since the tire was a 60 series it was actually a little shorter than the stock tire and crushing rpms went up which I did not care for.

I used the Metzeler 200/60-16 on my ride before going car tire. Except when a tire was ruined by road debris, I never got below 12k miles out of them on either my previous Wing or current Tourer. I ran a matching Metz in front and kept them at 40/42 PSI....front/rear respectively. To me the ride was better, handling was some better, braking was better mostly due to a larger contact patch than the 180. Once I tried the car tire, it was a no brainer as long as you get one with a fairly rounded shoulder. I've had a few panic stops in city traffic and never threatened with a topside dismount due to the rear sliding out to the side. It just seems to squat and grab in a pretty straight line....and more comfy to boot. Your experience will most likely differ.  |

I run an Avon Cobra 200/60R16 - and before that a Bridgestone "BattlAx" of the same size. Love the look, love the traction, hate the longevity. However, by replacing rear tires every 2 years (my annual riding mileage is modest) my drive line maintenance has never been better.  Terry |

I preemptively did the rear fender "nut cage mod" - so I'm unsure it was really necessary. It may depend more on your shocks, payload, etc.
Still, I recall it being a relatively easy modification.
Perhaps F6John or others can chime in.

I did the nut cage mod before I added the 200-60-16, as that was the common recommendation of the day.
