Today was my last "extra" day off due to a change in HR rules. My big plans for getting a bunch of projects done mostly fell by the wayside. But today I did get some of them done. It occurred to me today, that I not very good at getting rid of stuff. I've got a 57 Chevy Wagon that I haven't driven in years. I've got a boat I haven't used in years. I've got a Honda Fourtrax that I haven't used in years. I've got a motorhome that I haven't used in years. I've bicycles, cement mixer, power washers, table saws, trailers, etc. that get used seldom.
I think I might be turning into one of those dudes I watch on American Pickers. Except my crap ain't worth crap. Maybe I'm a low class hoarder ?

I have more "project" bikes sitting around than I can count on one hand.

The way that I look at it, they aren't becoming worth less money as they get older.

A true hoarder won't sell something even if they need the money.

Everything that I own can be bought for a price.

For somethings it just might take more $$ than anyone is willing to pay.

I know the feeling..... I've got..... a few..... firearms I haven't shot in years...  Embarrassed

But at least I took the trouble to set up a family trust that owns them so distribution to my spawn should be smooth once I shuffle off this mortal coil.

For sure things: Brenda has more patience than my Wife and you have more storage than I do.

Mine says if you haven't used it for a year, it goes.  Well except for her sewing room where the old adage still holds:  She whom dies with the most cloth wins.

What shape is the '57 wagon in?

Just say the word and I will come to your house and haul off everything that will fit in the wagon and all it will tow. I can be helpful like that on occasion.

Rob, I was just like you till 2 years ago I sold what I could sell, gave a bunch away,, took a bunch of stuff to goodwill. Threw away anything I did not use in 2 years. Moved to a smaller place. It was liberating.  Wink

Grin to me ? Good. To somebody else ? Terrible. In reality, somewhere in between. Needs a new rear end, cracked rear 1/4 window. 283, Powerglide. Good body, needs a repaint. Used to drive the crap out of it. It's one of those things I figure I'll get around to it when I retire.

I know the feeling..... I've got..... a few..... firearms I haven't shot in years.

Me too, but that's not hoarding.  It may not be great investing, but I will venture the clear majority of mine are worth more than I paid, and newer stuff worth pretty close to what I paid.  Everything back to the 1889 Mauser Commission rifle is in good firing condition too.

I would like my Colt Detective special back I got $175 for (many moons ago).  I still remember when I had to sell one to be able to afford to buy another one.  (Bad old days)

Besides that, how many of those hoarder shows have you seen where the hoarder keeps all her stuff in quality steel safes............ and it's always women on those shows (not that I can stand to watch more than a few minutes of such stupidity).

I hoard small stuff I have room for and actually use, like parts, lumber, widgets, fastners, tools, electrical/plumbing supply, wire, rope, gear.  Big stuff, I get rid of.

I also have a pretty decent library, with stacks of unread books I plan to get to.  They don't take up that much room.

There is the 4-man Jacuzzi on my deck that is still good, but I no longer use (winterized).  It's been free to a good home for years, and still is.  Bring more than two guys to lug it out though.

If you presented it as a 1-man and 3-woman Jacuzzi I bet it'd be gone in a flash...

when age 22 built brand new small ranch house standard 2 car 20x24' garage I thought to myself when builder asked  are you sure you do not want to make it a 3 car garage NOW will need it in the future.  I said, nope, we only  have 2 cars way back in 1993 no need.  Well,  now we have 4 cars, 5 cycles, 2 ATV's, 3 fishing boats, 2 trailers, and many other smaller items buried in the full 24x48' unfinished basement.  Now I wish I had another 3 car garage on top of the 2 car garage attached to the house.  2funny

Yup I have "stuff" that needs finishing, a couple of motorbike projects, Dirt bikes I hardly use but keep, Rifles that I haven't shot in years, Fishing gear....where to start Roll Eyes
Boats x 2 (replaced my outboard and went to pick it up the replacement....it was still on a boat)
Boat gear, biscuits, skis etc, reloading gear and piles of rifle brass, some I no longer have rifles to fit
2 cars, a truck and a van (plus the bikes)

But it's all too good to throw away....some I may sell, I have filled a skip bin with "stuff" that wasn't worth keeping.... well until I need it but it's gone now Tongue

So my 30 x 30 out building full of "stuff" isn't hoarding? Ye-haw, wait 'till I tell the spouse I am picking up another two wheel project in a few days. I may need to find a place to sling the hammock in there. Oh, I also have a 45 x 80 commercial building (unless I find a buyer) that isn't getting used to make cabinets anymore.

too bad that 45x80 building cannot be moved to my backyard,  I could easily fill up about 1/2 of that size, but then again,  would not fit in my city sized backyard lot.  I have been researching seriously though this year to get what would fit being an already pre-made shipped on semi 12x20 foot storage building moved and set down in my backyard where I want it costing say 6-7K.  That would at least fit my larger fishing boat, couple cycles, and 1 ATV, well maybe???  Less grass to mow right??? Wife said it would look stupid behind my 20x24 foot garage, which is true, but gotta do something, my 2 car garage is FULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I moved into my girlfriends (Now wife) house and was going to sell mine and combine our stuff, I decided to have a garage sale. Netted $1200.00 over a weekend. Had a garage sale at my girlfriends house, netted $950.00 But we had soooooo much stuff still left and it was so much work to have the sales. We decided Goodwill was the next step. Not kidding here, 28 pick up truck loads to Goodwill so far and I mean full bed load and back seat. We are about 95% done. WOW! so much STUFF! Which reminds me of this bit by George Carlin.

Your be surprised.  That's what I ended up getting.  Looked plenty big when I saw it on the lot.  By the time I got my tools, snowblower, two Valks and a m/c trailer in there was not a whole lot of room to get around.  Organization is a must.  Gotta move one bike outside to have the room to lift the other and work around it.

We are different.

A bit obsessive at times.  I tend to tackle one project at a time and see it through.  It is not a curse but not a total blessing either; at times I know I get tunnel visioned in on something, missing a few sunsets.

As far as selling stuff, Facebook Marketplace is really taking over Craigslist as the place to be.  With Marketplace one can "creep" on a potential contact to see if you really want to do business with them.  And folks tend to be nicer as the anonymity of Craigslist is no more.

Still a classic over here, not a lot of 57 wagons here

Back on the hording theme.... I have 5 chainsaws ..... 2 I have not used in years and would probably struggle to get running they have been sitting that long, nice to have a back up saw when falling trees... but I guess 4 back ups are not required

Unfortunately that is about all the room I have in my backyard left to put around a 12x20' storage shed.  I could go longer I guess being 24 feet?
