This cat sure does get in trouble... this picture is about a year and a half old...

She's fully recovered from the broken leg. Last night she hadn't come in by
10 or so, so I went out looking. She'd been shot, but not killed. We rushed
her off to the emergency vet clinic in the next county and she's there now,
don't really know how it will end.

We live out in the country, there's people who shoot stray animals that come
around their place making trouble, and that doesn't make them bad people...
but circumstances make me think the shooter was the one coming around
here, probably on the cut-over section just beyond our property, who
was in the wrong place. Everyone around here shoots, but my adjacent
neighbors know her and wouldn't shoot her on purpose, and I doubt
it was a stray shot.

We have four cats, that's about two too many, but what can you do? This
one's been to the vet this past week, she's getting older and maybe
her kidneys are shutting down... not long after I found her as a tiny
kitten under the kerosene tank at the corner store, I also came across
this poem which answers the question, "why do people even have cats?"

Anywho... there's a ton of problems in the world worse than hurt cats.

But I'm bummed...

-Mike

Back when I first got married (saved)  I had a beautiful pure White Husky/Shepard/Wolf cross named Luke that was my constant companion. Apparently he had  knocked up the neighbour's  pure bred  Golden Retriever , which again was apparently justification for the neighbour putting a .22 slug  in the back of Luke's neck. He was missing for a couple days....I found him in the crawl space of our little house, suffering. Took him to the vet and had to have him put down. I remember that day as being my first real experience of significant loss.
Hope the outcome with your cat is more positive....

I love me some cats!  They have been my buddies through thick and thin.  Our cats have been strays and ferals.  I'm sitting by our current "feral" Zoe who, after spending months under a chair can not stay out of our faces!  She's a sweet girl and a gentle spirit!  Looking out the window, there is a couple inches of fresh snow that fell last night, a bigger storm coming early next week.  It's a good morning for sipping a hot coffee with the cat on my lap!

FWIW, I more than understand your being bummed.  FWIW, prayers out for your cat.

We have both cats and dogs around the place.  It makes for a good balance of their respective personalities and karma:  Dogs-loveme, loveme, loveme...Cats-I'll let you know when I want love.

In the news, the little female kitty known as Grumpy Cat died the other day from a UTI and she was only seven.  Funny little thing with a turned down mouth that had captions inserted to raise a laugh; kinda like the Garfield cartoon.

People who shoot animals for no justifiable reason have damaged souls (opinion) and need a cleansing of the heart.
Some just like killing.  Too bad for all of us. Cry

Hope your buddy makes it and lives happily in your home. Smiley

There is a good reason all our cats have been indoors only . I love them while we have them, and I miss them when their time is done. And each has their own, distinct personality.

I've heard tell dogs have owners and cats have staff. Having had both I know this to be true. I was out on the road when our orange tiger stripe-go cat-was near as the Wife and Daughters could tell got poisnned-SP?-and my gals told me looked like he had died in agony. My wife always laughs at me about cats. I never really cared for them but would never in my wildest dreams think of harming one. My wife tells me that cats know that about me, so just to irritate me she swears they come and hang around me whereever I visit. I think she may be right.

Story about my sister's Siamese, crazy thing hung to me like a wart on my chin. Sitting on her couch one day I asked about a throw pillow she had that felt like it had something hard inside. Told me it was a vibrating pillow, just needed batteries then you press in the center and it would vibrate quite good. I dug up some batteries and got it working, then laid it on the floor. Her cat came along and checked it out, a couple times I shooed it away 'cuz I knew he'd come back....which he did. He sniffed at a bit since it now had my odor, then stepped onto the pillow. No vibration....had to be pressure in the center. A moment later he stepped all the way on it and sat down dead center causing the pillow to vibrate. Picture old cartoons where Sylvester will levitate straight up then shoot off in one direction....never to be seen for a few hours. That was my sister's cat, never to be seen until I went to bed. I laid down then plopped my head on the pillow, only to be met with a loud yowl and a gray body shooting out from in between the pillows. Not sure who was the most startled....me or the cat.  Grin

We didn't go see Delta (the white cat) yesterday, we went over there to
see her today after Church... she's all shaved, got some tubes in her. By
whatever metrics they use, she is getting better and they are encouraged.

She hasn't eaten anything yet, they suggested we bring her bowl and
the food she is used to and perhaps we could shame her (Joe and Punisher's
words  Wink ) into eating. She was glad to see us, but didn't eat anything.

They got the biggest chunk of the bullet out, some little pieces sprinkled
around inside her will have to stay. Her intestines were perforated in about
four places, but no damage to stuff like hearts and livers and gizzards and
stuff. Terrible damage to some muscles on one side. That first night we
brought her in she was in surgery for several hours plugging the holes and
sewing her back together...

We have a great vet that we use, but it sure is nice to have access to
this place in Anderson, open till midnight every night, at least one
vet there 24 hours a day.  There were about eight vet techs and a vet
there today, Sunday. Such a place is not cheap, though...

Delta is the fourth letter in the greek alphabet. Delta is cat number four.
That's about two too many, but what can you do? She's my main pal.

That pure white cat is in the background of so many of your pictures, she either likes you or is actually your guardian angel.   Smiley

I (we) had a lot of cats, but only one followed me around all day outside.

One of our street rescues was an older Tuxedo kitten stray that got a rear leg run over by a car (or something).

We asked the vet to save the leg if possible, but when we picked him up, he got named Tripod.

He had two speeds; when slow he walked like a bunny rabbit, and full speed.

Tripod didn't like going outside much, bad mojo happened out there.

Sorry for your turmoil.
I had a tuxedo who just adored me. Poor taste, but I'll take it.
He'd follow me like a puppy.
One evening he came home, kinda weak and bubbling out his side. He'd been shot by an neighbor.
The Vet couldn't save him. A great loss in my life.
The neighbor, driving by shortly thereafter stopped and told me to keep the rest of my dam animals out of his yard.
My wrath vented for a year and a half.

me too  Angry ... I'm confident that wouldn't happen with any of my adjacent
neighbors, and pretty sure none of the further out neighbors would shoot
an animal if they knew it was mine... someone did it, though...

I washed the pollen off the red bike and ran it over to the vet who's treating the
other (kidney problem) cat (pardon me while I go re-read the thing about
why people even have cats - OK, I'm back)... she won't eat the special
food, I got a different kind of the special food, she ate some of it... in
a minute we're off to see the shot cat 45 minutes away in Anderson...
They called this morning and she ate a little yesterday  cooldude

Cats are amazing. Each one has his or her own unique personality. Lesa and I cannot refuse a stray either. Our latest one is growing up to be a real sweetheart. Loves staying home, but outside. Was a bit aloof for a while but as he grows he gets more and more snuggly.
Good luck with Delta....she looks like the real deal !

Mike, when I saw the wounded cat pic, I thought .22.  (but there's a really large number of different .22 bullets) (20 to 40 grains of lead) (slower in pistol and faster from rifle).  I also thought somewhat poor marksmanship, though she may have been quartering away from the shooter.

Those projectile pieces appear to be showing copper (color), and most all 22s have a copper jacket (either hollow points with a semi jacket, or a full metal jacket).  The good expansion in the large fragment makes me think hollow point.

The large fragment looks pretty big for a pellet, and no pellets I know of have copper jackets, they are all soft lead, (and can be .177, .22, 5mm or .25 caliber, and also in HP or flat point target styles) (soft lead pellets could absolutely fragment on impact too) (and 1200 fps to 450fps) (.177 pellets have 10 grains of lead, and .22 have 18 grains of lead or a bit more).

If that bullet made fairly deep penetration, then that also makes me think .22.

If you have a small electronic (or powder) scale, weighing the large pellet (or both together) could also be informative.

There are 7000 grains of lead in a pound.

I'm guessing a .22 rifle with scope.

I also though somewhat poor marksmanship

I almost wish they weren't so poor, but it may still end OK... she's
whacked out on the pain med, so still no chance to try and get her
to eat.

The bullet went deep.

Our smallest scale won't weigh it.

Jess I reckon it is probably what you think it is...

Most animals are incredibly tough, compared to humans.

She made it this far, unless there's a postop infection she'll very likely pull through.

She'll eat when she's ready, hopefully taking some water though (or IV).

The next question is, will her personality/behavior be different later?  Probably not too different.

I imagine cat's personalities are as diverse as people's. We had a stray cat give birth to kittens in our hurricane destroyed garage. Maybe the owners left the cat after the hurricane, many people had to pack up and move. Any way, after they grew a little we kept one kitten and my parents took the rest to the pound. I've never been a big fan of cats, but Tiger was pretty cool. All 4 of us kids became attached to her. Then one day we couldn't find her. Eventually we did find her in the adjacent cotton field. The neighbor boys across the street had shot her with a pellet gun. She lived. But she never went in that cotton field again. Even the prospect of mice for the taking out there couldn't entice her. A few months later we packed all our worldly possessions, and a cat and dog into a Chevy Nova station wagon and a 55 Chevy 2 ton flatbed and headed for Alaska. On the way we camped near a lake and went down swimming, leaving Tiger in the tent. A dirt devil came thru and destroyed the tent. We thought Tiger was a goner. She came thru that unscathed. She was one tough cat. Lived to be about 12.

Happy to hear Delta is coming along! She is one tough cookie and she will probably be a bit more attached to you once she gets better.....sure hope so. She is a fighter and showing it. The man upstairs has a plan for her and you are part of it.

As for the guy that shot her?

It would be nice to be able to know who did this and get them to pay the vet bill and some additional painful justice

Hi Oss...

Numerous people around me have said that, but you're the first that's a lawyer, so
I'll ask...

I wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on trying to get someone who
I thought/claimed did it to pay the bill, would I? Maybe if a kid got  caught, their
daddy would man-up...

Someone may brag to a neighbor and thats how you will know who did it

If it was someone from this street, that's how we'll end up knowing... I only know,
though, that it must have happened on the cut-over section adjacent to us. She
ranges  off through there, but I don't see how she could have hiked a long way
after being shot to get back to where I found her, on our property at the
edge of the cut-over... she was hurt bad... Jess imagined a rifle and
a scope from a distance... I imagine someone from who-knows-where in, or
on the edge of, the cut-over section, which abuts fields and properties that
aren't on our road... She stumbled over to her litter box last night, and
ate a few bites this morning... I hope the shooter never rears his ugly
head again and just screws off, if there's ever any evidence of him again
I'll cross that bridge when I come to it... over the years I've confronted a
few shooters who thought the direction of our land was their downrange,
I'm very sure I'd confront this fellow if I got a chance...

I'd forget about trying to sue someone for it (vet bill).

(Short of a full confession) it would be near impossible to prove up a shooter, and lots of defenses (it looked like a bunny to me).

The better angle are offenses for shooting a firearm too near or toward dwellings or roads, or hunting out of season or with no license.

Another thing to consider is getting the property posted for no hunting/shooting.

Though state laws vary widely, and many already have something like this:

South Carolina:
Any person entering upon the lands of another for the purpose of hunting, fishing, trapping, netting; for gathering fruit, wild flowers, cultivated flowers, shrubbery, straw, turf, vegetables or herbs; or for cutting timber on such land, without the consent of the owner or manager, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Posting may not add much to existing laws, except it puts people on notice that the owner is serious about it.

And of course there are game cameras.

Where I live, fines for unleashed dogs can be very high, but there is no leash law for cats.  Animals that roam freely are always going to be at risk.

It's tough when the vet bill for a free cat approaches the cost of a horse.  I told the wife we should just get another (rescue) cat (several times), but she paid enough in vet bills over the years to buy several horses.

Years ago, I had a neighbor accuse me of shooting their cat with a pellet (removed from rear leg, and far less damage than yours).  While I am extremely careful about it, I had removed hundreds of squirrels from my property over the years.  I didn't do it.  When the cop came to question me about it, I took him out back to the shed and showed him the stray mother and litter of new kittens we were rescuing.  You know how hard it is to find homes for 6 kittens?

Can't we just keep them?  For crying out loud, we already have 3 cats (on a third acre).  We kept the mother.
