There is a fuel screen that is the only "filter" on a stock bike.  Its attached to the petcock and you cant see it because its up inside the tank.  These bikes have millions of miles with just using this screen filter, I wouldnt worry too much.  It seems more people have issues with modifications to the fuel lines to run additional filters and quick releases.

PO had installed a filter on my ride.  I removed it in short order.

My past experience:

1. Inline fuel filter... caused a shortage of fuel to the carbs.
2. Quick detach in the fuel line...  caused a shortage of fuel to the carbs.
3. Dan Marc fuel shutoff... I removed this when I removed the quick detach. Not sure whether or not it contributed to fuel supply issues but plan to try it at a later date without the QD and see how it performs.

Well....FWIW, I've been running an inline filter and Dan Marc shutoff for close to 15 yrs. w/o any issues. Only problem I have when touring is the I/S tank, it seems to run low after about 200 miles.  Roll Eyes Wink

I used a generic 3/8" inline filter from napa before the tee to the left/right carb banks. Bike came to me already with a manual Pingel petcock. Necessary? Probably not. But I had the rack off to replace the float needles as one was getting incontinent, and the original hoses didn't seem in the greatest shape so replaced everything. The screen on the petcock is just that, it'll keep the rocks and marbles out but that's about it. Figured that an actual filter couldn't hurt, especially since stuck/leaking needle on these bikes has a decent chance of leading to a hydrolock.

It has absolutely zero fuel delivery issues, something I've tested by holding it WOT for about 5 minutes at a time. If it was going to starve for gas, it would have then.

reduced fuel flow lowers float bowl level which translates into a leaner air/fuel ratio. too lean and u will make a nice wrist pin viewing hole in the piston top.  this would happen before u noticed it starving for fuel. the oem in tank fuel filter is more than enough.

If you decide to rig for towing, you'll want to upgrade to the larger 1/4" orifice Dan-Marc.  I pulled a Timeout camper to Morgantown and had fuel starvation with the smaller DM.  With the larger one, doesn't happen.
