Soooooo, if my research on a nearly 20 year old bike is correct, the 2001 "standard" Valk did not (or possibly did not) come factory with a windshield. I am guessing that's why the bike I bought last year has a National Cycles (NC) windshield....which really sucks because due to the mounting brackets and speedo & tach it's like having a wall mounted on the front of the bike.

I would love to be able to find, purchase, and throw a tourer shield on the bike but I cannot even confirm if the main bracket will mount to a 2001 standard. Is there anyone out there that knows if that bracket will mount? If so, please feel free to email me at superjoe37@gmail.com. I am new to the bike and having a difficult time finding any info on the web. My main goal other than having a nice looking shield on the bike is one that can be angled back to provide a little better aerodynamics.

Thanks in advance for any help in the matter

Nothing wrong with the NC shield had one for anout 80k miles. Have a fairing now. No not any standard came with a shield and ues a tourer shield will work. But it is stationary not adjustable. And very high dollar if you can find one in half decent shape.

Hello Superjoe...

It is the Tourer windshield hardware that is hard to get. If it
doesn't come with a shield, or if the shield is bad, you still
might not want to pass it up. You can get good shields all
day long that fit the OEM hardware from a couple of
places, Clearview is a good one.

National Cycle makes more than one shield, I remember the
"switchblade" seeming like a really good one.

Almost the only difference between a Standard and a Tourer
is the shield and the bags.

When our Valkyries were new, Honda offered the Tourer's windshield as an 'official' accessory.  The only difference was that the 'Tourer' logo was missing.  Somewhere around here I have the accessory catalog listing it.  As I remember it was expensive, around $500 or $600.

Of course this is now nothing more than an historical note.  But if you could find one it might be worthwhile, as it's outstanding.  It provides great wind protection, looks good, and is extremely well made.  Another plus is that it only takes a minute or so to remove or replace.

Just a note on a SlipStreamer Classic as seen on my ride involved me making 1 1/4" spacers to get the angle I wanted and clearing the speedo and tach. Very much like the smaller shield compared to the OEM Tourer setup but did involve some revision.

I put a Memphis Shades on my 2001 Standard. Bolt on installation. My bracket is adjustable (although not all were). The windshields were available in different heights. I have no idea if any are still available.

My quick mount bracket looks like this

h13man-I finally found the link to the slipstreamer shield, it was only about 4 pages deep in the google search. Do you have any pics of the spacer you made? you can email them directly to me if you have any at superjoe37@gmail.com.

Thanks

My tech page on how to tip your windshield.  This article is on a Rifle shield but it applies the same to a Honda OEM shield and others.  Easy and reversible.  Other benefits listed in the article.  I've tipped the OEM shield on Deerslayer and Jade, besides this Rifle shield.  Note the angle on the shields in the pics below.  http://www.horseapple.com/Valkyrie/Tech_Tips/Windshield_Tipping/windshield_tipping.html

I also have a Memphis Shades. I installed it on my 2003 when the bike was new.
The company is great to deal with. Last year one of the Fork Clamps broke. I called them, they  shipped me a set of four absolutely free. That's great customer service.

Joe , I have a windshield in my stock from a Valk tourer. Hole spacing and height measurements could be sent to me and I will check the shield.  I am leaving for IZ Thursday morning. PM me a phone number and I will measure and take pictures before I leave if possible. It could be yours for a small $ plus shipping.

Sorry about the lousy pic. I didn't even think uploaded from Imgur. My apologies'. Had Gkid's requiring attention and was pulled away.

My ONLY gripe with that company is their refusal to make a set of Trigger-Lock side plates for their Fats windshield line.

My '99 Tourer currently wears a Memphis Bat Wing and has Trigger-Lock mounts. I love that setup but would like a clear shield at times...without going through the hassle of changing the fork tube mounts to accommodate the Shades system. I also have two sets of Trigger-Lock side plates: One for a VTX1800 and the other (acquired last night) for a VT750/1100 ACE. Unfortunately, neither work on the Valkyrie.

What I've been thinking about doing is to machine the top part of a set of Fats Valkyrie plates to accommodate the Trigger-Lock hardware and then close up the existing bottom slot with a piece of another side plate and some aluminum brazing rod. A bit of finish sanding, then lay out and cut the new mounting slot.

Of course, if anyone reading this knows of an existing Trigger-Lock plate that will work for a Valkyrie and a Fats shield then I'll owe ya a beverage!

On a side note, back to the original topic: Eventually I'm going to sell my OEM Tourer windshield and mounting hardware along with a lot of other (mostly new) aftermarket accessories. Look for details in the Classifieds some time.

Update:

I just bought myself a beer. Or a case of the good stuff for this One Neat Trick.  cooldude

Was poking around online looking at Trigger-Lock side plates when I spied a pair that might have the right extension and mount-hole spacing to use with my existing Bat Wing Trigger-Lock mount hardware. Taking a chance, I ordered them.

These are Memphis P/N MEK1723 - polished "plates only" - for a Victory Hammer. They also offer a set of plates for this model in black.

A disclaimer: My Tourer has a National Cycle light bar with a set of H-D deep profile spot lamps. They're thicker front-to-back than the originals which came with the bar. The N/C part or a Cobra light bar may prove for different fitment challenges, but here's how things stacked up.

First - to clear the turn-signal mounts on each side of the bar, the lower windshield attachment hardware needs a minor modification. Instead of using the two long (supplied with windshield) castle nuts, sub them for a pair of shorter Nylok nuts. I used chrome ones. The upper mounting bolt hardware is fine as-is.

Second - the Trigger-Lock bushings allow for a little fore-aft adjustment by virtue of a set screw which can be loosened then the windshield (or Bat Wing) can be tipped into the desired position. You may or may not have to adjust things when swapping between the fairing and a windshield.

Lastly - this arrangement isn't "5-second Plug-and-Play". It took me a few minutes to finalize the position of everything and I may have to adjust the mounts yet again when putting the fairing back on. Clearance between the shield and the spot lamp housings is nonexistent. I may look into milling the light bar mounting holes a bit to move the bar further forward.

But it works. The shield bears on the lamp housings ever so slightly and this seems to give a bit more rigidity to things.

I believe all the tourers came with Hondaline windshields. I like it better because the material is polycarbonate which is shatter resistant as opposed to the Plexiglas on almost all aftermarket Valk windshields. The tailored cutout for the headlight bucket is nifty too.  Polycarbonate, unfortunately, scratches easily. That's why the factor applies a thin protective film to the surface. Unfortunately again, any scratches etc. on the film is impossible to buff out and old Hondaline windshields can only be restored by peeling off the protective film. Also, the stock hardware even if you can find it will cost you more than the windshield.
