I always wanted to know where a certain road Quaker Ridge went which is accessed off 129 just a few miles of that great ice cream place in Croton and yesterday I took out the bmw to do just that. What could go wrong?

The road starts right near the bottom of the Croton Dam and about a mile in there is a one lane bridge right past a 10mph  sign where the road crosses over the croton river downstream of the dam.

Over the bridge and up the road going left. Now I am in the Town of Cortlandt NY    Road is steep and the crowns themselves as well/
Lots of lefts and rights to the top of the ridge. Amazing old houses with tons of land, then the road straightens out and climbs again  eastward and north.  I take whichever roads dont have dead end on them and the road goes from paved to not paved to dirt.  Wowee.

It has rained to beat the band all week so soon I am encountering yards wide craters filled with water and on my left is the immense Croton Reservoir. Next I pass 4 people on horseback that just come out of the woods on my right  Was not expecting that one

I believe the road turned to Milt Green Rd but no sign
 Shocked

The road passes through county parkland - nobody lives here  it is protected watershed- on the north side of Bald Mtn. and if it wasnt washed out I would have crossed under the Taconic Parkway in another 10 minutes or so but no access to that road. (You cant get there from here)   Beautiful scenery, lots of deer but going 10-15mph bottom of 2nd gear, they are no issue.

I continue about half a mile or so more now I am along the reservoir and it is all mud and holes, Time to turn around so I execute a W turn (too narrow for a K turn) almost drop the bike and ride back out

There is no path thru the deep potholes its like a minefield and if I drop this beast it aint gonna get easier.

Kicking myself for not taking pics  YOu have to know your limitations

After I took another set of nice lonely roads in terrible shape home thru crotonville and back to 9.

When up there a few years back doing your Columbus Day Ride, I was amazed at how 25 miles out of NYC everything became so “country”. (Glad you didn’t have a get off)

I believe I've been through Cortlandt before. It's beautiful out there. Like MH says, just a few miles outside of the Big Apple, you can find lots of apples still on the tree.

Side note: Oss, we got absolutely drenched the first day out on our trip going through your area. We ended up getting off the road and got a room in Haskell. This was the site of my first bike drop. The parking lot had just been sealed and was slick as snot. Scott dropped his too...lol

Oss,

Great story! Nothing in the world or in life experiences that can compare with piloting a bike down unknown roads... And, doing so solo is yet another dimension to that experience that is truly life changing... not to mention life enhancing!

All of us relate to your quest for discovery and going where we don't know how things might turn out... especially when the possibilities include hardship, danger... and calamity! Risk and uncertainty are formidable obstacles in our path... Memories of overcoming them and having passed the test when our mettle was tested are part of the pay-offs.

Congrats on measuring up!!! For having the courage and curiosity to venture down that road, and for having the 'right stuff' to make it through to tell about the adventure!
