I'm either driving a Valkyrie or an Airbus... it just depends on the day of the week.

I'm no help on the NC wrench, but when my desmogged bike started backfiring loud enough to make cars swerve away from perceived gunfire, it was crummy vacuum caps on the inside nipples of the intake runners, cracking or blowing off entirely.  It especially happened on hard deceleration from higher RPMs (like dropping the throttle to slow down).  If that's it, they are not hard to fix (just hard to see and work on).  Do not use cheapo auto parts vacuum caps, find good HD strong ones.

I suppose it could be the same thing on a non desmogged bike, if your vacuum lines to them have cracked at the inside intake nipples.  Once cracked there, the high pressures opens big holes quickly.

One of those bright LED headband lights is ideal for seeing/working back there.

I don't know if that's what you mean by engine misfires.
