Rebuilding the petcock. That's done.

I have the 16952-MZ0-003. It comes with the strainer, O-ring and some other part. Not sure where that goes. Its not on a part diagram I looked it. Fits over the fuel tube. Almost looks like it should go on the end of the fuel tube then slide the fuel strainer over it and it helps stabilize the fuel strainer where the tube ends? It shows up in pictures if you search for the kit number above. Has has the kit been updated to include that part?

You mean this drawing? https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/1998/gl1500c-a-valkyrie/fuel-tank
The drawing shows where the O-ring and strainer go, but not where the rubber cylinder fits, nor how they are held together. You say it fits over the fuel tube - is it also tight inside the strainer, like a cork may be?  If it fits snugly to both parts, I would guess the O-ring squeezes them together when the assembly is tightened to the tank.

We need someone who has taken that apart to chime in here.

On the fuel strainer there is a band that goes around the middle (more or less).  The rubber piece goes inside the strainer in this location.  The pick-up tube uses this piece as a support for the strainer to keep it centered and supported...hope this is clear.

Good luck...

So, it slides up the tube and into the wider area, a little more than half way up, in the photos on this? https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/16952-MZ0-003?ref=bc0f08cc7b0a63c724682ada77ab9e9a44a2af6d
Makes sense; you may need some lube to get it there.

To lube it just spritz it with some regular rubbing alcohol. It will slip right into place and the alky will dry up without leaving any residue.

Yep, you’ve got it...Honda changed the design at least once.  The newer one like that shown doesn’t have the reinforced plastic support, but the band is in the same location.  Putting the rubber piece in this location keeps the screen area clear and the pickup tube from being blocked.  If it wasn’t such a pain to post pictures I’d show an example of the old style screen.  I’d be glad t email a few pictures if needed.

let us know how you made out.

Thanks all! Much appreciated. When I looked at it I thought the band would go there but I wanted to be sure. I was looking at the shop manual and didn't see anything on the fuel strainer. Plus if it did it wouldn't have shown this newer strainer. I can get it back together now.

The petcock larger diaphragm was leaking but I couldn't tell where looking at it. Turns out it was in the very center. It would still flow fuel but the leaking diaphragm created a vacuum leak via the vent on the petcock. And inconsistent fuel flow. When I rebuilt it last time about 8 years ago it was so bad I first thought I was out of fuel. I know many have replaced there petcock with aftermarket. I might consider that down the road but I do keep a spare rebuild kit handy for now.

Next a carp sync with DigiSync. Looking forward to that. The Sync has never been checked. I rebuilt the carbs 2 years ago but didn't have the DigiSync at the time.

It’s a great tool and makes the carb sync both easy and accurate...glad I got one. I make sure to take out the battery between uses (usually for long periods) since a leaky battery could destroy the unit.

Yes, I have the DigiSync battery out on mine as well for that reason.
