South Carolina

« on: July 07, 2019, 02:23:25 PM »

Allan rode up to South Carolina from Mississippi and got here
last Thursday... We (Carolyn) cooked steaks on the grill and we
had a good time. Friday morning Allan and I headed off in a
roundabout path to meet up with Britman for BBQ...

I took Allan through South Carolina's Eastatoe Valley... we had
noodled around quite a bit before we got there, so when we
got there we stopped for a drink of water...

He's not about to crash here,  Smiley we're pulling out of a hairpin intersection in
a curve of 178, South Carolina's version of The Dragon.

We turned off 178 at Rocky Bottom and headed towards Rosman on some
Roads that had less holiday traffic... We got a little rain after a while...

We came up on a truck that could only go 1mph up the grade (I'm serious). Clumps
of cars would go around him whenever they could see that the coast was clear...

By the time we got to Britman's abode, a real storm was brewing. We barely made
it inside before the bottom fell out. It rained a long time. Our plan had been
to meet at Britman's and ride over to Jim's Smokin' Q, but we ended up riding
over to a less remarkable but still OK BBQ place just down the road in Britman's
car.

Allan and I headed back to SC and we went out to eat at the good pizza place
in Walhalla.. Carolyn picked the toppings...

Next morning Allan and I headed back over the hill to Clayton and Britman took
us on a bunch of  good local backroads.

We arrived at Two Wheels of Suches for Lunch around 1:00

When we left we had Smokin' Joe and Gordon and Wayne with us...

Britman pulled into an overlook and everyone started lining up for a
photo...

Everyone except Gordon... he had a historical aversion to the edge of
that particular piece of asphalt due to some previous miscalculation about
its true extent...

We rode into Helen...

It was a horrid holiday mess, backed up out of site...

As soon as we hit the backup, the turn Britman had planned for (I guess  coolsmiley )
was there and we were out of the mess almost right away...

An overlook we passed, see the couple taking a selfie?

After a good day of riding on good roads we all stayed in Clayton at the
Days Inn... everyone for home on Sunday morning after breakfast at the Awful Waffel...

Thanks.   cooldude

How were the temps down there?  (it's been murder up here)

I'm kind of tired of all the rain, but it's the only time the temps drop, a little.

That turn near Helen was planned.

I avoid Helen like the plague.

I've disliked the place since I first drove there in September of 1993.

How were the temps down there?

People were dressing like Frank Smoak  2funny ...

Hot, but rainy enough for everything to still be nice
and lush in July... hate it when it is 95 and dry and
crispy...

If it looks like this in Helen, then I don't remember ever having been
there...
