Can't tell you how bad i feel having to ask this, but here goes: Which way does the u-joint go? Long part to the engine or the rear?

It will only work one way. The splines are different diameter. Prove it to yourself  by sticking the driveshaft splines in each end. It will only fit correctly at one end. Then you will know which way it goes

All good advice above.  If I remember correctly,  when you look at the U joint in the parts fiche, it is deceiving.  The picture looks like the short end is forward,  but actually it is the long end.
