Picked up a Blue/Silver Interstate trunk for my Blue/Cream Standard.

While taking it apart and cleaning, I pulled off the chrome rack and it appears that the Silver is actually a piece of vinyl (or something) and not painted; anyone pull this off with good results?

If it's a decal, isn't it under the clear coat?

Finally figured out how to get back into my old photobucket

I would have though it to be under the clear coat as well... but here you go.

Or something like this?

But I suspect that my Black IS had been re-branded as a IS/Tourer paint/overlay patterns.

No idea... I simply found it odd that everything under the washer had moved sideways and was bubbled up and peeling.

The stripe between colors on all body panels is a decal.  The trunk lid is the only place the secondary color is also a decal to my knowledge.  The trunk lower, saddlebags, tank, fairing, and front fender are all two colors of paint with a decal stripe between.  The decals should be under the clear on all panels.  I would leave it alone until you're ready to paint, then be ready to fix the gouges you make in the plastic scraping the decal off.  It WON'T come off in one piece.

For trivia, on the 1500 Wings, the shape and "paint or decal" varied between early and later models, and the decal was not always the finished secondary color.  The Candy Spectra Red they used on many year models was a charcoal colored decal with yellow stripe, placed on top of a silver base coat.  The Candy Red top coat was translucent, and was sprayed over them to make two tones of red (well, three with the stripe).  It would also look different based on whether they made 2, 3, or more passes with the paint gun, and is a royal #@%$ to match to an existing paint job.

Interesting...mine is a standard and I had the Tsukayu bags painted...never considered the accent color would be a decal.  I did indeed leave it alone, figured the painter can mess with it.

I will say the PERMATEX black plastic welder did a great job of filling in the holes from the chrome guard, not noticeable unless you know to look for it.

Nice info on the GW... that must be maddening trying to match a color in that manner!
