Trying to put a 2003 back on the road after sitting for 3 years.  Charged battery and it started but couple of carbs leaked and it runs rough (imagine that).  Was wondering if anyone can give me an approximate cost on carb rebuild kits.  Obviously, got six to do!  I know what I have been quoted for labor.

try tightening up the threaded rods that hold the carb bank together. sometimes that is all it takes.

https://redeye.ecrater.com/c/414983/carb-intake-seal-kits    is the kit to get.

Your best bet is to have Big BF schedule a visit and put that thing back in showroom condition.  It will cost $1000 for the carb rebuilds and tune up but it will run like a scalded ape afterwards.  Well worth having Master Yoda do the job.  Had the same issue with the Tourer after setting for 3 years - but mine were so bad it took extra efforts, extra parts and I had him put Interstate springs in during the rebuild so my bill was $1700.  Would gladly spend it again for how fantastic this thing runs now.

With 3 years of sitting, you should check the gas tank for rust and make sure the petcock is operating properly as well.  If the tank is rust free, I'd be truly surprised.  Mine was really bad - had to get a new tank.

About $200 if you buy the following:

Redeyetech complete carb rebuild kit (has gaskets, seals, o rings to do all 6 carbs)....approx $105 shipped

Replacement screw kits from redeyetech (highly recommended)...about $11 when ordered with other redeyetech parts.

If not desmogged, buy the redeyetech pair valve tubing.  Also, buy the 3 intake plugs.

Buy set of intake gaskets from redeyetech while you’re at it.

New main and secondary jets (6 of each) from Sudco ($60 shipped)..if you try to clean the jets and don’t get them spotless or if you score the orifices you will be pulling the carbs again, re-doing the rebuild and buying new jets anyways.

Buy 6 new float valves from Sudco...about $6 each.  Honda OEM are almost $19 each or $114 from dealer

New

New OEM Honda fuel tubing, and carb vent tubing from Bikebandit, partzilla, your Honda dealer, or similar.  Prices vary.

The carb drain line kit is no longer available from Honda.  Be sure to save the 6-way connector.  You can buy the necessary 5ft of tubing from Amazon.  I’ve found that the 4mm id tubing works best.  You can pm me if needed for the recommended tubing.

You need to own a mityvac (or equivalent) or borrow one from a friend.  Needed to test the air cut valves.

Seafoam or MMO for lubing the new o rings.

Two or three cans of carb cleaner and either can of air duster or access to a source of compressed air to blow out the ports during cleaning.

Between the Honda service manual and the redeyetech instructions (awesome BTW) this is a doable job.  Just be organized, do one carb at a time, keep parts for each carb together, and ask for help when needed.

I did a complete overhaul of my carbs last summer and just finished a complete rebuild of a spare set of carbs for the next time if needed.  This makes pulling and reinstalling the carbs a one day job instead of a week job.

I replaced my thermostat and radiator tubing while the carbs were out of the bike.  Only way to access the upper tubing and thermostat without trying to remove the radiator.

After five years of enjoyable riding, the carburetor demons have descended upon me.  I need to have someone perform some magic upon my Valk.  I've been an aircraft mechanic for many years but rebuilding a R-1340 carburetor (about the size of a briggs & Stratton motor) is not anywhere like the tea cup size of a Valk carburetor.  Reading above, this "Big BF" is the one I need to talk to.  I live a bit west of Houston, but I will haul my bike to him.  How can I get in touch with him?

BigBF is great.  Especially if you can get him to come to you.

If you can't work it out with BigBF, and don't want to do them yourself, there is another option now.  David Wilder, in North Carolina, who is active on the various Valkyrie-related Facebook pages, will rebuild, sync, and color tune your carburetors on his test engine if you send them to him.

Color tune?, I thought I was the only crazy one who has one.  Grin

Hi Doc, I just went through this with my standard, after sitting for years with corn in the tank she would not start.  I pulled and drained the tank, drained the carbs, pulled the drain hoses up and out and started pouring Berrymans down the hoses till they filled, turn the engine over and let it sit a few hours or days, repeat, repeat, repeat.  Reinstalled the tank, poured in a couple of gallons of real gas and another can of Berrymans and she started but ran rough.  After about 30 minutes of run time she is running like a champ.  Spend over 1k if you have money to burn, or two or three cans of Barrymans and a few hours of work to get the same results.

FYI, I tried this procedure once with Seafoam with no joy, repeated with Berrymans with success.

YMMV
