My son was a barber in September, working long hours, no time for lunch breaks, no benefits, made decent money, had a large clientele.

Michigan recently offered the largest tax incentives to the movie industry to shoot here, and there are many films currently being shot in this area.  One is a remake of the 1984 movie Red Dawn.  My son (he's half Korean) cut a set builders hair working on the movie.  He told my son they could probably use him as an extra on the movie, so he quit the barber shop and started working as an extra (in this version of Red Dawn, the Chinese invade the US not the Russians), well, today he signed a stunt contract and will probably be joining the screen actors guild.

There are several local folks working as extras on this flick, and several local businesses supporting the industry while they shoot here.  Since the state of MI is experiencing budget issues, they are considering reducing the tax incentive for the film industry, and the FI is saying they will move on if they do.  To me this demonstrates that raising taxes hurts economic growth something our politicians don't seem to grasp.  Any way, enough politics...

I found a video on youtube a bystander shot of the crew filming.  It happened to be a shot my son was in (He's driving the Humvee) and I thought I would share it.  I'm very proud of him.

That's wonderful! I hope your son has a fun time doing this, and who knows what can happen? It's a great opportunity in an area that's been hard hit for many years. I grew up in Redford Township, left in '61, but home is home. Hope the pols get their heads out of their butts & let free enterprise work its magic. Congratulations, proud papa, I'll go see it when it comes out!

Those incentives have been great in helping bring back film production to the states.  Canada started the whole incentive movement years ago and sucked almost all the film production away from the lower 48.  There was a big movement in the local film industry to bring production back home which prompted Louisiana and New Mexico to offer up incentives.  They have seen great results and now Michigan has followed suit.  Texas just started an incentive program which - I hope - will see positive results.

A little off topic...Spent a month at Ted Nugent's place in Concord a few years ago working on a show called "Wanted Ted or Alive".  Had a blast!   Ted was great to work with.  Felt like I got to know the "motor city madman" a little bit as he would hang with me and my lighting crew when not on camera.  His ranch foreman/outfitter Big Jim took a liking to us as well which was a big help whenever we needed getting something done out of the ordinary.  And by the way, Ted lives by his words...

I've also shot in Lansing and Detroit, so I'm hoping to make the Michigan Inzane next year to get my MI fix! cooldude

Hey Valk Boy Jr., when you were shooting in Lansing and Detroit, did you ever cross paths with a lighting guy named Bob McKenzie?  Heys a good friend of mine and worked in lighting field on comercilas and such.  Just curious.

Thanks Karen, hope you enjoy the movie.  Eric calls me almost every day to tell me how much fun he is having and how wonderful all the people he is working with are.  He says he couldn't go back to what he was doing, and even if the acting/stunt thing doesn't work out, he also made some friends in the props group, so that's a fall back option.

Just goes to show you that you never know how the people you meet will affect your life, and every day is a new opportunity, so don't give up hope.
