I was riding about 55 MPH on the way home today and twice I heard what sounded like crumpled up leaves or paper fluttering around.   The sound seemed to be coming from the Bike somewhere under or forward of the gas tank.  Granted - locating the sound is nigh impossible at 55 with a helmet on.

It lasted perhaps 7 seconds the first time and maybe 5 or so the second time.  That was it.  Never heard it again.  There were NO physical oddities occurring at the time.  I even thought it might have been some small patches of gravel dust getting kicked up by the tire - who knows?

Any suggestions?

I have had several occasions where plastic grocery bags have got caught on the front of the radiator, both times while on the freeway. Sometimes they blow off themselves or I’ve had to pull them away at the next stop. Sounded just like what you described.

Once, for me, it was the zipper on my jacket...

Another time it was one of the fasteners on my air wings...

Persistent strange noises can be investigated by going up on the lift (a little) and walking around looking, shaking, wiggling, tapping with a rubber mallet, spinning wheels, etc.

I have a persistent little clunk when letting off the front brakes.  It's probably a brake pad/clip.  Everything looks and works fine, and wear is normal and consistent.  So I let it clunk.

My knee clunks from time to time too, but it's different from the one on my bike.

Then there's the chronic sonic tinnitus in my head.  It's not voices, just noise.  Grin

Sometimes bad bearings can sound a bit crumply.   If the sound is more obvious in a left or right lean just maybe...

Good points guys.  I didn't see any plastic  bags, but I've already done the walk around, crawl around, poke around, and found nothing at all.  If it happens again I'll give her a much more thorough look.

I briefly thought about pulling the tank and looking for leaves in the air cleaner; but not till after I had just filled the tank and really would rather not drain it.

It's possible one of these puppies could be it.  I had one fall off almost 2 decades ago.

They are rubber pads inside the fender. I think for noise suppression ?

Glued on, they can start to come loose, and flap like the old close-pin and playing card on the spokes (but not as regular/consistent).

I immediately ran out to the garage and ran my fingers under the fender.  I can feel the pads and they all feel secured still.
Really good call to check it though.
FWIW I gave her another 70 miles yesterday and never heard a thing.  So who knows.

It's possible one of these puppies could be it.  I had one fall off almost 2 decades ago.

I had two fall off in 2001 at InZane 1 in the pinstriping tent.  The adhesive must have gotten weak from the long ride across country from Colorado to Ohio.  They were stuck to my tire and I thought they were something I had picked up on the road.  It wasn’t until a few years later that I found out where they actually came from.  I bought a full set of 4 about 14 years ago for replacement but still haven’t installed them yet.

I think they are designed for both noise deadening and protection from rock dents in the front fender.

I you're one of those guys who sprays engine degreaser (or some such) under the fenders and engine/frame periodically, or uses a pressure washer, then it may come loose (sooner than otherwise).

Mine let go several years ago.  Just sat the aside.   Didn't notice any change in noise coming from the front.

I had a similar noise and traced it down to my helmet, a Bell,  the little air inlet ports on top that can open and close were rattling around at times. I figured it out because both bikes made the same noise, a new quality helmet was a permanent fix. Schuberth
