I believe I have an exhaust leak right where the 3 pipes go into the collector. I took the pipe off and there is a small amount of play/movement in the area. I have never heard of this before. Maybe Tig welding? Maybe it’s too tight in there. Thoughts?

At the place you describe, there's a small hole to drain condensation. This prevents rust in the pipes.

Well I took it all apart. It’s definitely leaking where the 3 pipes go into the collector. One pipe was very loose. Having it welded next week.

Your right it’s like that on one of my bikes, it’s rotted out so bad I had to buy an exhaust for the left side, I took it to a machine shop but they said it’s too far gone they could fabricated a new exhaust for me but it was more than just buying a good used exhaust from eBay, and getting it lined up would be hard to do, keep the chrome covers on to use as a jig to get it lined up, after you tack weld it then take the covers off and finish welding, good luck

Did you have success getting your pipes welded?  What type welding was done (mig/tig/?)?  Also what type metal are our pipes made of?  I have a similar problem as yours.....mine due to loose bolts on rear bracket not tightened after tire change.  Local shop did work but I didn't notice it in time.......Thanks for any info......

I took the pipe to a welding shop and they TIG welded about 50% around each of the 3 pipes. They said their gun was too big to do anything more.
I took the pipe to another shop and they said they couldn’t do anything more.....no space they said.
I took the pipe to shop #3 and he said “I can weld that”. Picked it up today. It appears he MIG welded it.....not pretty but looks like he got all the way around the 3 pipes.
I installed today and no more leaking. I love my Valkyrie again.
I had no rust on the pipe. Plenty of good material to weld.
I wonder if brazing would have been better but I’m not a welder.

BTW, the whole reason for this was my dissatisfaction with my glasspacks. I hated the drone from those pipes.
I cut them out and installed 2 Flo-Pro baffle packs. Much quieter and the drone is gone. I love my Valkyrie again.

Dave.....Thanks for the reply.  I'll pull my left side exhaust off in the next couple of days.  I'm limited to number of local weld shops in my area but your experience will help me better zero in on best welder fit.  I too hate the leaking exhaust noise.  Can't wait to repair to more fully enjoy my rides again.  Meanwhile, too hot in Texas these days to ride much anyway.  Take care.  Again, thanks for the reply.  Rancher

Lotsa folks love the glasspack sound.  But we are individuals so YMMV.  Also tinnitus can rear it's ugly head for many of us, especially those with many miles under their belt, particularly in noisy venues.  I personally have to deal with that thanks to the fighter jets in the nam.  Anywho, this is one reason I offer Silencers as an option.  I run them myself on Jade.  You get the extra power and the rumbly note from the glasspack mod, and can tone down the volume to close to stock with the silencers while retaining the note and power.

OK so having said that - on the other subject, fixing broken header welds.  I have welded MANY that broke from advanced miles and corrosion - especially on bikes from the SE coast.  You can't do a decent weld on the outside of the pipes due to the 3 pipe's close proximity.  So I mount the pipes on my jig which holds them in their correct original alignment.  Do a Light weld around the outer joints where I can access it to set their alignment w/o the jig.  Then cut the muffler can apart a couple inches in, and thoroughly weld it on the inside.  That weld will never break as I add much more material than Honda does - this is where they welded it in the first place, but their weld is too light to survive excessive corrosion.  Looks like this:

This is best done right before the glasspack mod as I have to go inside the can there anyway to weld in the header collector then add the glasspack before buttoning it back up. Can do this repair at minimal cost when combined with a glasspack mod.

Yep gotcha!
I believe my original glass packs were Thrush. I do wear a Shoei full face helmet which seems to exacerbate the drone problem. I have cut out the Thrush mufflers and replaced with the FloPro baffle packs. These new packs are not straight through......they snake through causing more back pressure. My power seems better now. I couldn’t be happier.
