I rode home from work today, totally forgetting that I was supposed to go straight over to my in-laws to celebrate my FIL's 87th birthday. It was about 115* and I was a little warm by the time I got home. As I'm getting out of my sweaty, meaty clothes I get a phone call from my wife asking where I was. Seemed like a dumb question until she reminded me of her Dad's birthday.  uglystupid2 I apologize and tell her I will be there soon. I get changed into clean clothes and figure I'll just wear my tennis shoes. I roll back out of my garage like I've done I don't know how many thousands of times. As I'm making a backwards turn I realize something is different. Without that extra inch from my boots the downhill side is not making a rote exercise so rote. I felt very close to falling over. Luckily, I was able to shift my weight to the uphill side quick enough to avoid an embarrassing "Laugh In" tricycle tip over.
Just because you do something over and over again doesn't mean something can't happen unexpectedly.  ???

Hear ya Rob, I back down my driveway past my truck then turn bars left then drive to the end. Very nervous about too much weight on the right hip, lean it way left to be sure.
And when I go with sneakers, I always miss second gear the first couple times.

I almost dumped the black bike backing out of my plush well lit garage
a few days ago... there's a point, and its not too far over, where you
might as well let these 750 lb bikes just go to keep from hurting yourself...

always stay AGATT

I roll my bikes out of a shed backwards down a very narrow, steep ramp into a river rock driveway.   As I come down the ramp I have to turn my bars and roll back to my plywood landing pad,  where I can turn toward the driveway and plow through the thick gravel to the street.   It's far from ideal,  but it is what it is.   Car tires really help!   I always wear ATG when attempting these awkward manuvers.

Not wishing to hijack the thread (did someone already do that?), but I normally wear boots whether riding or not.  I occasionally ride with sneakers or loafers.

Sneakers never?  If one is truly concerned that much for the safety of his feet he should wrap a cage around himself for travel.   Wink

When I first got my Valkyrie, I still rode around in my boat shoes... Then one day
a fellow I was riding with took my picture. I figured I was an idiot for riding around
like that, and chopped the feet out of the picture... and started wearing my
Danner boots, which have 100,000 Valkyrie miles on them now  cooldude ...

hijacking is fine with me. (I’m not even sure there was a hijack) The point I wished to make was that in my haste to get to the birthday celebration, I didn’t give any thought to the difference in height. And it almost cost me. Maybe only some scratches on the bike. But that would suck.

how tall are you?  what is your inseam?  do you have an aftermarket seat or rear shocks that raises the seat height up more so?

Stock seat and stock suspension/tires on my Valk I/S me being 30 inch inseam and only 5'10" I have no issues unless totally uneven pavement and I 99% of the time wear tennis shoes never had an issue in most normal incline situations tipping over not being able to hold up the cycle.  I am I think flat footed no problems on even, level pavement and even slightly uneven pavement not really on my top toes yet.  Both my scooters having taller seat height I am not flat footed seat height about 31-32 inches but those weight 350-600lbs. so not an issue leaning them over more so than the big Valk.   I have tried wearing cycling/hiking thicker boots and NO way can get them under the foot shifter so have to ride with thinner tennis shoes probably mostly due to the cobra larger floorboards I have which take up more forward space for my feet since I am only size 11 shoes.
