1st Place Street Kings National Cruiser Class

Phoenix

« on: August 26, 2019, 10:23:20 AM »

I finally made the decision to sell the F6B. I have avoided any real bad situations (wrecks) for a very long time now. Had some very close calls, as we all have. I am still totally confident in my riding skills and abilities, it's just everyone else on the road here. It has gotten so bad here in Phoenix, you wouldn't believe it. I take the truck (Don't dare ride the bike) to work in the morning (4:30 AM) and I'm doing at least 10 to 15MPH over the speed limit (Freeway) and I'm constantly being passed like I was standing still. Cars and trucks weaving in and out of lanes with no regard as to what or who is around them. You lean on the horn because someone is coming into your lane and they just keep on coming. Remember when you use to blow the horn in that situation and the driver would jerk back into his lane? NOT ANYMORE! And it only gets worse as the time of day passes. And the red light runners here are at just about every intersection. Seems like every other driver I see is texting or on the phone. The last 4 or 5 times I have been out on the bike with the wife, I didn't have any fun. With the wife on the back I am taking her life into my hands and out on the road. I have a real hard time dealing with that mentally. If something were to happen to her while we were on the bike, I don't think I could deal with it. If I lived out of town or in a small town, I would probably have a different outlook and keep on riding. But this city is DANGEROUS for a motorcycle rider, it's getting worse and I can't chance it any longer. Lets face it, we all roll the dice every time we mount up. I can't do it any more, especially with the wife on the back. I have thought about this for quite a while now and finally came to a decision. I think that when I travel to other states there may be some times I would rent a bike for the day but for the here and now, I can't see owning one any more.  Undecided
So, just before this entry, I was on Craig's List and listed it.
I will still come around and read all the stories once in a while and may even have a comment or post here and there.
You all be safe out there and I will see ya around.  cooldude

I can't disagree with your reasoning and conclusion, but I'm sad that this city is turning into a race track and a dangerous one at that.

Good luck with the sale of your F6B.

Wow. Sorry to hear that you are leaving the sport. I live in Surprise and other than the usual "old timers" who like to cross 5 lanes to make a left turn, I'm still comfortable on the bike.
Granted I ride Solo so I don't have the Spousal unit to be concerned with.

Yeah I have given it alot of thought over the past few months. I looked back on how it use to be and I just can't in any way, justify riding in this insane city with her on the back. If something were to happen.............well.......I just don't know what I would do.  Undecided

I almost got clipped yesterday in a Cornville intersection. There are no stoplights in Cornville. Luckily I had my eyes on the driver's eyes, and he was looking right over me, missed his rear bumper by a mere two wheel revolutions. SOAB!!

Yeah they seem to either NOT, see you, or, they just don't care, because you are on a bike and they figure you will stop or get out of the way. I also firmly believe there are many that just plain don't like motorcycles AND, the people who ride them. It is a no win situation no matter which way you look at it.
Right now in this city, it is NOT a matter of if, it is a matter of when a driver will get you and how bad it will be. I can't chance it anymore, espically with the wife on the back.

About 15 years ago, I made the exact same decision about riding my bike to/from work in DC.

It would save me very decent money (over time) from paying to park car and ride the metro daily (and 30 minutes of travel time), OR to drive my car in and park ($20 every day); cycle parking was a quarter an hour.

But the traffic was terrible (all the way from my house the 17 miles in), but DC was just a madhouse.  Merging from the 35mph GW Parkway up onto the DC beltway (over the Potomac into DC) went from 7 to 70 miles an hour in 35 feet in a hard lean, and no one on the packed three lane let you in.  Racing multiple short lights (with cameras) in long lines of cars worrying if you stopped on yellow you would get creamed by a Suburban, or run the light and get a big fine (to not get creamed).  And the DC international cab driver's association, has 10 thousand cabs, but just one shared driver's license for all of them.  And potholes bad enough to bend my rear rim (the very first time I rode my 2d bike into work to show it off). A buddy of mine (in our computer section) got knocked off his bike three summers in a row.  And, I found I was usually angry about the ride for a half hour after each ride in or home.  It gave bad mojo to riding in general, and needed to stop.

It was not if..... only when you would eventually get hit.

So it was 15 more years of riding a subway, jogging up 100 yard escalators, changing trains both ways, standing up the whole way on crowded days, sitting with Aholes with blaring walkmen, and fat girls who smashed you up against the window (though they were really warm in the cold winters).  They made you fall asleep and miss your connection (waking up 15-20 miles out at the end of some wrong train line).

Coming from Southern California, I agree.  I figured riding to work on the 405 freeway was like playing Russian Roulette.  I mostly rode with the VRCC group on weekends.  Now living north of Prescott, I avoid most traffic and have good roads to ride.

Well, a nice guy from Safford bought the F6B last Fri. He seemed to be very happy with it and the condition it was in. Sad to see it go but I have been pushing the envelope for 40+ years now and the texting drivers finally pushed me over the edge on this decision. To the rest of you I say be safe out there!  cooldude

I left Denver to be able to keep riding in my older years.  I feel safe in Gilbert but Phoenix is too much.

I bought a Shadow 750 Phantom for a daily rider and will always keep the Valkyrie for trips.

My soul needs to keep riding.

I know what you are talking about. Being on a bike and in the wind, I will miss somewhat. I do have a 2000 Trans Am with t-tops and it's fun to drive.  cooldude And about a month ago, I purchased a 2006 Corvette with a removable roof (Targa Top) and it's allot of fun to drive and can be scary fast.  coolsmiley I know it's not the same, but I do love my cars.
