Author Topic: Hi Temperature Switch Location?  (Read 1056 times)

According to the manual for my '97 Valkyrie, the high temp light only comes on in case of excessive temperature.. i.e., there is no "test" position so confirm that the bulb is even operational.  Given no other gauge to inform me of high temperatures (or low coolant), it makes me a bit nervous to know if the warning system is functioning properly.

Only thing I can see to test is to locate the temperature switch, then unplug the connection and temporarily ground it to confirm that the light comes on.  Of course, there is still the unanswered question of a malfunctioning temp switch.

I found the FAN switch on the lower left/aft side of the radiator, but thus far have not been able to spot the (presumed) separate switch for the warning light.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the location?

I bookmarked this post because I have a 99 that the temp light flickers on once in a while. This post shows how it works and the fix for the false light coming on on the 97-99 models. 97-99 has a Thermo sensor and the 00-03
have a Thermostatic switch both are in the Thermostat housing. The sensor in the 97-99 malfunctions quite a bit.

Thanks for the response,
I DID find the temperature "sensor" just off the thermostat housing.  I jumpered that connection to ground.. no warning light came on.
Then, I pulled out the temperature indicator module (behind the coolant reservoir), found the light green/black wire and grounded that wire.. voila.. the warning light DID come on.

So, it seems to me that the indicator module is faulty, and, apparently unavailable.

I've seen other posts suggesting just a swap to later year temperature SWITCH, vs SENSOR, then wiring it directly to the warning light wire.

A couple of questions, hopefully someone can answer:

1) Is there a source for the temperature SWITCH?
If not, does anyone know what metric thread size is used for that sensor?  Perhaps I can find a generic sensor to substitute

2) How does that connector to the temperature indicator module come off?  Do you PUSH in on the two lock tabs, or pull them OUT?

Thanks
I am still trying to find the location of that sensor. Do I need to remove the radiator to access? Any guidance on finding the bugger will be appreciated

I have the same problem with my 98 tourer. After looking at the schematics for both types I've decided to replace the sensor with a later model one and connect the wires to the module and the lamp together bypassing the module altogether.
I bought a sensor for the 2k and up and will probably get after it soon.
I'm dealing with some serious  pain in my right knee and need to sort that out first.
