I just wanted to thank everyone who was able to make the Joseph Rally. It was wonderful ....and terrible. It seems that people rarely have the opportunity to reveal their real selves in such an event. That wasn’t the case for Joseph Jaunt 2019. We had a great group of people at the event. The weather was OK, the setting was wonderful and the roads incredible. All the things we love in a good rally. As with any motorcycle event, there is always the possibility of an accident. Sadly, the last 3 events I’ve attended, Joseph 2018, Valhalla 2019, and Joseph 2019, each event has resulted in a motorcycle crash. People we know. People we care about. In the case of the most recent occurrence, Joseph Jaunt 2019, it was my best friend of 36 years, Gary Wood (Domino 1). Gary’s bike was totalled, but Gary came away much better. It was terrible to see the carnage, but was wonderful to see the entire group from the Northwest come together to provide support. I am always blown away by the ability of good people to wow me with their generosity and caring spirits. I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you all (and I mean everyone) for showing up at the ER, for providing care and assistance, and for the food and friendship after the accident. This is the meaning of “family” so far as I understand it.
As a follow up, Gary was transported home and is resting well. He has several doctors visits, exams, and diagnostic imaging appointments to attend to in the near future to determine the total extent of his injuries and necessary course of treatment. But anyone who knows Gary knows that he is all too ornery to be put down by a mere injury.
We all feel truly blessed by the outpouring of help and concern by those who were there. Thanks again, and I truly hope we can all be together again soon.

Glad to see you all got home and that Gary is now able to rest and get the care and attention he needs. Our three groups from BC, WA, and ID have come together to be real friends, so there was never any doubt we would all do what we could to comfort him in his time of need.
Was a great few days for sure other than that unfortunate moment, and looking on the positive side of the incident, Gary came out a whole lot better than he might have going down like that...here's hoping all his upcoming tests come with good news. Please pass on Lisa's and my best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I got home this evening after an 11.5 hour run....about 550 miles. Dodged a few deer  in the AM and got stuck in a major accident lineup on I-90, but otherwise an uneventful ride in decent weather most of the way. Will post up some pictures later.

Aw man what a bummer  Sad but here's to a speedy recovery.

Much better to lose the bike than the rider.

I know, not much consolation but &*$t happens and it's good to see that people can pull together when they need too!

Rider down! Oh $&^%. Gary glad to see you're back home, and looking well. Prayers all the tests come out OK.

Get well, and get back on the road. It was hard the 1st time getting back into a bike after my accident.

Picked up Gary from his Dr. visit this morning. There are more tests to be run as it seems he’s bunged up his left ankle as well as the knee. Still, he’s much more spry than the first few days after his accident. I believe it will be all good from here but will update as things progress. I’m meeting with the insurance adjuster tomorrow to help him remember all the things we added to his bike. Thanks for all your positive thoughts everyone. Take care.

Gary received a settlement of about $4100.00 for his bike. They totaled it as we thought. After close inspection you could tell that the upper rear section of the frame was bent. It’s sad really, was a beautiful and unique color. Gary is still on crutches but his knee is heeling well.

Thanks for both the reports. So the tests have been going fine for Gary too then. Good. It looked like he was staying comfortable with the ice pack.

I have been following this post for several weeks.  I was planning on trying to attend this year, BUT due to personal problems wasn't able to ride up there.

Glad to hear that Gary is doing good.

What caused the accident?   Just curious.

It’s like they always say, most catastrophic events are a series of smaller events leading to the failure. In Gary’s case, I believe it was the fact that he had worked 9 12 hour night shifts followed by 3 day shifts at work. When we rode from Boise to Joseph, all was well. We even had a rain day to rest up but I don’t believe it was enough. We all rode to Lewiston from Joseph on the Rattlesnake highway, had lunch and headed back. Gary had mentioned that he was feeling drowsy but had a couple large glasses of iced tea and thought he’d be OK. All he remembers is he went into a corner and when he came out of it he was into the side of the road already. He fell asleep.

Greg, thanks for keeping us updated.  And that Gary is doing well.
Did the adjuster allow for the aftermarket parts separately?  hopefully they also covered the loss of his riding gear.
Thanks!

Hey Steve, I really appreciated your advice and have been helping Gary with the insurance based on your advice. As you suggested there might be, there was some haggling back and forth regarding things covered. That being said, they did finally come through on some of the accessories and his riding gear. I believe it all worked out well and fairly. Hopefully we can shop for a new bike for Gary soon and get him riding again as soon as he mends.

Update on Gary and his situation. I believe he received a fair settlement on his bike. Insurance company was fair an easy to deal with. Some items, like his ultimate seats, he opted to keep because their assessment of their worth was so low. The big news is that he is off crutches, has had all his stitches out, and will return to work this week. He’s not ready to run any marathons, but he’s progressing well.
Take care all.

Hey all. One last update on my friend Gary. Had breakfast with him Saturday and he walked in almost like there had been no injury. He showed me a photo of his knee, and it is about 90% healed from what it had been (think hamburger). He still has a large wound about the size of a silver dollar ($2CAN) that is real pink and still somewhat sore. After that heals up though he’ll be fine.
Now we just have to get him a new bike.
