Interesting, 51% of Americans want it changed? I wonder what the cross section (political affiliation, demographics and social perspective) of the respondents was. While in college, I took a couple of courses in surveying (not geographical), the biggest lessons I learned was that the pollsters (surveyors) can craft a survey and get the desired results any time they want to. Draft the questions appropriately and select your audience to be polled. Even a truly fair survey can be crafted to get desired results. Who did this polling? I searched and couldn't find out who Online Caravan is/was. That was the name at the top of the results page. Anyone know? Rams

And if you ask these people, they call themselves liberals and/or progressive. I was flamed for days because I replied to my actor friend's post about confronting those tiki torch carrying morons and shutting down their right to peaceful, lawful assembly and free speech. While his peeps were calling for killing them, beating them, even hanging them, I reminded him that if someone has the right to take away their rights, it's only a matter of time before they come after yours. I told him that it's better to not show up and let their words not even be heard. I even reminded him that his entire industry teeters on free speech. I reminded him that we all learned in school that someone once said "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it" and that we can't just pick and choose what to defend. His NYC Dem/Lib/Prog colleagues, associates, friends, and I bet family too, went at me and called me all kinds of insane things. I was told I was a nazi, white supremecist, white nationalist, racist, etc. over and over again. Must have been 250 replies calling me the most horrific stuff. How liberal of them, right?

After school, most of the continued education comes from journal and magazine articles. In order to best assess findings and accuracy, etc., you need to take into consideration who wrote it, who they work for, who funded the study, who the cross section of the population was, who seems to gain the most (patient vs ? ). I agree with your assessment on the info being too high level.

Step 1 - Ban hate speech Step 2 - Make sure your people get to define what is and isn't hate speech Step 3 - Shut up and get on the cattle car.

Anybody read George Orwell's 1984 (1949) lately?
It missed the 1984 mark, but could easily be titled 2019.
Constant government surveillance, rewriting history, Newspeak, and the Thought Police.

I do not believe a majority of us want a new first amendment.
I don't believe any reported polling anymore (unless it reports 90% voted a certain way; and then I'm still mistrustful).
The supreme court has a couple centuries of opinions on protected (1st amend) speech, and it provides a good balance between individual liberty and clear and present danger of bad things (like screaming fire in a crowded theater). To be balanced in each case (because hard and fast rules don't work).
The left is all about squashing any opinions or advocacy contrary to their chosen mantra of the day. Screw them and their main stream media, and (virtually) all their polls.
It's certainly hypocrisy for the left, who spend their days screaming their outrage about racist, bigot, sexist, misogynist, privileged, religious people or party policy and calling for their heads to roll, to argue about limiting speech anyway, isn't it? They live to lie, misdirect, disrupt, dispute, hate, and manipulate in nearly all their words and deeds. They need (and use) the first amendment to get away with their perpetual bullsh!t.

I did and agree...today that thought process is, what is in it for me...I fear for my two boys and the world that they are going to be left with...I remember my father saying similar things about the cold war...looking back, that was the good ole days...now I look and ask, who won the cold war???

It has not been the left who has been calling for journalists to be banned from the Whitehouse. It has not been the left who has waged a constant battle against the supposed "fake news". It has not been the left threatening suit against news organizations. Hypocrisy indeed.

It has not been the left who has waged a constant battle against the supposed "fake news".They make it, of course they don't battle against it. Here's a particular example that sticks in my craw: https://www.prageru.com/video/the-charlottesville-lie/-Mike

Just saw a poll where 80% of whatever young liberals or progressives are now called don't know what the first amendment covers. They just know it has to be changed or eliminated.

The only one I know of being banned from the white house was Jim Acosta for assaulting a women trying to take a mic away from him. When a news organization like CNN, MSNBC,NYT ect, make up a story or manipulate a quote to fit their ajenda that is "fake news". When a so called "expert" is called in to question the presidents fitness for office without ever examining him that is fake news. When another questions his health because he drinks to much diet coke that is irrelevant. Oh and when a representative from CA makes up what he "perceived" the president as saying during a hearing that is contempt. Why is this such a hard concept for you to grasp?

Like my old pappy used to say, "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it." They really don't have a clue. The definition of "Hate Speech" is really dependent on the perspective of the listener. What you thought you heard is not what I said type thing. Or maybe, you heard what you wanted to hear come from me, not what I said...…… The list goes on and on. What ever happened to Sticks and Stone will break my bones but words can never hurt me. Grow the hell up. Rams

Dave Chappelle on the first and second ammendment. "(I) don't get mad at 'em, don't hate on 'em," he said while discussing comedians he knows to be racist. "Man, it's not that serious. The First Amendment is first for a reason. Second Amendment is just in case the First one doesn't work out." https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/dave-chappelle-freedom-speech-cancel-culture-first-amendment-for-a-reason
