Dear friends
I recently started studying guns and practicing shooting.
As is expected, what started with a single gun (a Sig Sauer p226 Mark 25, a.k.a. Navy) grew fast to the current collection: a) Sig Sauer p226 Navy. b) Sig Sauer p220 Equinox (.45 acp). c) HK USP9 Stainless. d) HK USP9 Stainless compact.
I'm looking for the next new gun with a budget of 900 bucks and would like to ask for suggestions?
I'm considering one of the options listed in the poll.
If was you (and factoring the current collection above mentioned), what would you buy next with the budget available?
I was looking for something that would be complementary to my collection and would be fun to shoot. Preferably something not that old (i.e. made in the last 15-20 years) and parts are available.

Don't know (And don't wanna get into) your stance on Israel, but I won't buy an HK, they refuse to sell weapons to Israel.
So that'd narrow it down to one of the Sig's, as far as my input goes.

Oh, really? I had no idea HK didn't sell to Israel. My personal view is that Israel is one of the only reliable allies of the USA in the Middle East (of course, our tax money pays for their whole military but that is another can of worms...).

Whereas Desert Eagle is (was) a very fine pistol mfg. in Israel for a time and is now made in USA, I believe. Not in your price range but worth investigating (.357 & .44 magpistol)

Well, you now have four double action autos. So I'd get the single action 1911 (and experience what a really fine trigger is like). You know from my previous posts that I'm partial to 1911s. I don't have a Sig 1911, but they are probably fine pistols. And since the other four all have fixed sights, I'd get adjustable target sights. (though that costs a bit more than fixed, but you don't need a rail on the dust cover) And in the traditional .45acp of course. That still keeps you in two calibers. Additionally, there is a huge aftermarket for 1911s, unlike some of your other choices. It'll be the heaviest of the lot, but you should have no trouble lifting it.

Jess has good ideas... I'm rather partial to this Sig 1911, it matches my first tattoo, and I've come VERY close to buying it several times...

It means "come and take them". When the Persian king Xerxes demanded that the Spartans surrender their weapons at Thermopylae, King Leonidas of Sparta responded with this phrase. -RP

I forgot to add....
I don't know much about the HK's.
I have both a Sig 220 and 226. I prefer the Sig 226 because it is 40 cal. and has all the features I like...….Double action , exposed hammer, de-rooster lever and a 10 round magazine. Only fault is its a bit heavy to carry. I really like the feel of a 1911 especially in " super 38 cal."
When I am in polite social circles I carry a Walther PPK 380, its light and doesn't have much bulk. But when in a rougher crowd, it's the bigger the better......

Nobody has ever asked you what you would or wouldn't buy based on I don't know what. The guy wanted to know what gun he should spend $900.00 on. Very simple concept, isn't it? Don't bring "the irrelevant" into the conversation. It wasn't about that to begin with.

I agree on the 1911. Have been hinting that to you for a while! You have great taste in Sigs so..... One of my favorite Sigs in the 1911 category is the Nightmare. Rounded off grip for better concealment and just a downright SEXY gun!. Best of all...it's a Sig. Not sure if it is in your price range yet but if not...wait until it is. They also have a carry version of it and a Sig Emperor Scorpion carry version. https://www.sigsauer.com/store/1911-fastback-nightmare-full-size.html A divergent....Keep in mind that a 5" 1911 chambered in 9mm would be one of the sweetest shooting guns you can wrap a hand around. Just saying! That should give you something else to think about. They probably hold too many rounds for California though.

Ar15/ar10 pistol 10 inch barrel sba3 brace. Brace works well as stock. In essence you have a short barrel rifle without the art registration, and it is legal as a pistol. Which works with carry license. Great house and car gun.

Unfortunately, until/unless Savago leaves California, that isn't an option, unless he wants to get a bolt action or break open top single shot abomination... (And yes, they do make bolt action and/or break open single shot AR pistols just for those stuck in a slave state.) Any form of real AR pistol is banned there.

IMHO, you can't have too many. I apologize in advance for this non-response, but did you ever consider a wheel gun? I admit I am prejudiced in favor of revolvers (I own seven versus one pistol). I even bought my wife a "silver pistola" for our 25th anniversary. North American Arms (NAA) .22 LR Mini-Revolver A top break is also a lot of fun. Check out the H&R Sportsman 999 (another .22 and cheap to shoot). You can never go wrong with a Smith & Wesson revolver. SO . . . . Pardon the interruption. You may return to your discussion of 1911s.

(He thought he was John Wayne incarnate after that Christmas)

Part of the CA insanity is that any single action revolver must have at least a 4 inch barrel. (Because criminals and terrorists love single action revolvers.... or they did 100 years ago ) But there's this.

Can't go wrong with Smith? Fellow I work with bought a new in box 686 from Smith's famous Custom Shop. We loaded it up and within the first 6 shots noticed it was peeling part of the jacket off each round. The reason? The cylinder was never clocked right! Each chamber was so far off compared to the barrel bore you could see it with the naked eye. He bought an M&P .45 and had to send that back as well. Nice and smooth until you completely loaded a mag. Almost impossible to rack the first round into the chamber no matter what brand ammo we tried. He still loves them though and overall I guess they do alright.

Had one for a short time because the price was right. Didn't feel right and was a very dirty gun to fire. The new owner say's it needed to be cleaned every 100 rounds.

It's a totally different animal, but if I had $900 to drop today I'd grab myself one of these. https://www.brownells.com/firearms/handguns/semi-auto/scorpion-evo-3-s1-pistols-prod89790.aspx Just for the fun of it.

Nowadays $900 bucks will get you a 7.5" shorty AR, a full size, and still have enough for a thousand rounds or so of ammo and a pile of mags.

Main issue is that the California gun roster *severely* limits options. In the end I found a HK USP 45 Expert (got have at least two .45 acp pistols, right?) for 768 bucks in FDE (Flat Dark Earth) that I couldn't say no! Now I got wait the mandatory 10 days of wait (precisely 240 hours) before starting shooting it. The remaining funds will properly be used buying more ammo.

I'm building one right now, though mine is a 8.5" in 300aac. I have right at 600 in it and that is with 4 30 round standard capacity mags and 2 10 round mags. Another 100 bucks and it will have a nice vortex red dot on it. A few hundred rounds and I'll be at that 900. I pieced it together with what I wanted on it. Going to build a second one with a 10.5" barrel next. Probably not legal in California though.

Wrapping up the story: after the gun was able to leave the jail (i.e. mandatory 10 days wait thanks to California gun law... ), I took it to the range. And, oh boy... This thing shoots! I don't known if it is because of the longer sight radius, the longer barrel (has 5.1 inches), the adjustable sights or my gorilla hands fitting better on it's bigger frame, but I'm able to hit reliably targets at 20m (or 21 yards). Keep in mind I'm a total newbie on firearms. Already logged over 350 flawless rounds in the last 4 visits to the range and I'm loving this gun. Odds are I may end up selling the Sig Sauer p220 Equinox, as it is not seeing much .45 acp action after the Expert arrived home. It comes standard with a Match trigger ( https://www.hkpro.com/forum/hk-reference-library/233531-here-s-why-usp-expert-trigger-much-better.html), which is also *way* better than my other HKs (USP and USPc). I guess a Match trigger job is upcoming to the little sisters of the Expert. I spoke with the range master (that happens to have one too) and he laughed and said that while shooting his Expert, 100yds are perfectly doable. I guess I got a long way to go. :-)

Everyone should shoot better with a longer barrel and sight radius, adjustable sights, better trigger, and heavier (up to a point) handgun.
As you hone skills, I find the trigger about the most important variable to accuracy. New CNC technology can result in fine triggers with drop in parts. In the old days you had to pay a smith to give you a great trigger.
Try some different ammo while you're at it. You may find your sights need tweeked a bit between 185 and 230 grains.
.45acp ball tends to rip targets more than most handgun ammo.
