I'm curious why my '97 1500CT never needs choked, regardless of outdoor temp or how long it's been since I had the old girl our for a spin.

Spark any comments?

Thanks!

Every engine is different. I use my choke to hold idle when it’s cold but I never need it for starting. I have friends that couldn’t start the bike on a cold day without the choke.

Lots of variables. Vacuum leaks. Spark plugs and possibly spark plug orientation. Carb sync, battery strength, internal condition of carburetors and fuel system.  Who knows

for temps below 40-50F
pilot jets are too large or
idle mixture screws are opened to much.

both cases reduce MPG and both indicate carbs that are not dialed in correctly.

Thanks for replies.

My suspicion is carb related.  I've not been in them.  Had the beast only a couple of months.

She seems to run quite well but local MPG = 24.  I do tend to goose her quite a bit.

I've got 4" Truck pipes and I'm now wondering whether I should open up a carb and see how they're jetted.

Just exploiting the generosity and formidable experience of you folks.

Thanks again.

My I/S with 130000+ miles on the clock rarely needs the choke. When it's cold-25 F or colder-then she needs the choke. Some years back here in Missouri I went on a F C R. When I left my house it was 17 degrees F. Phatt Ghurl argued a bit BUT she fired up. As Chris stated-they are all different. State of tune state of the battery state of the gasoline temp humidity-lotsa variables. RIDE SAFE.

I owned a '97 Tourer that never needed choked. Ran like a scolded dog. Later I got a '98, at some point needed a carb cleaning. I ordered some 38 slow jets for the '98 and since then it required less choking in warm weather, most times none. Warm up times to get the kickstand up was considerably less also.

I don't know if any mods were made to the '97, but was the easiest to start & get in gear and going. Wish I had kept that one. Still have the '98, has fewer miles.
