Do people go Christmas carolling in your neighborhood?

For a week or two, Elaine, a homeowner in NW Calgary, had a sign outside her house:



I happened to come across a picture of the sign and an address on Reddit, so decided to show up.  My wife and my brother, who had an early-evening obligation, showed up later, and we had a lot of fun.  Elaine and her co-organizer and neighbor, Amanda, expected to get seven or eight people, but more than thirty showed up.  We sang our way down the street, ringing doorbells of people who were obviously home, and serenaded each of them with a short song or two.  When we were wrapping things up my brother, from Winnipeg, recognized Amanda and realized they knew each other thirty years ago when they worked together at a church summer camp, and she invited the three of us to her family's home for hot chocolate and cookies.

Three different TV stations saw the appeal for carollers online, and showed up with cameras, and each broadcast an end-of-the-newscast story about the event.

Does carolling ever happen in your neighborhoods?

No, we being a rural community, but some people organize through churches and civic groups to visit nursing homes, the hospital, and senior citizen centers.  A nice touch around the holidays for those that may need some of the human(e) touch.

Timely post since last night I went out with my church.

It started about a week ago, the wife said she wanted to go but I was like, bah humbug and as the day and time neared she said lets go to dinner and then go.

  Good and bad I thought, but in the spirit of Christmas and at the unspoken persuasion of the wife I went. Must admit had a good time and we did not go to houses but went to an apartment complex. People came out on their balcony, some sang along, parents brought the kids out it was like the spirit of Christmas returned.

 We drove home with the top down and singing Christmas songs and just enjoyed the evening.

 Back a long time ago I used to go with my parents and a few friends and had fond memories of those times. Had to actually thank the wife for her persuasion to go since I really did enjoy it.

Member of my church went out this last Sunday, to the assisted living
places and to the homes of some old folks associated with the church
but no longer able to get out regularly.

I wish I had gone with them, I remember how much my mother liked
it when the carolers came to her house when she was a shut-in...

Many years ago I owned a Riding Stable and I also boarded horse there, almost all the boarded horses belonged to kids..ranging from 10 to 16 years of age.  They decided that they would like to go Christmas Caroling on Christmas Eve.
l     So I loaded their horses on trailers and took them down town.  They had decorated themselves and their horses in holiday costumes and off we went. 
The kids had a great time, I had a great time and the people that the kids sang to had a great time.

I want to thank hupcap for putting this post up, because it brought back some great memories.

Been doing it every year for 45 years. Fun
We have a group of about 30 including kids and we visit the shut in elderly and widows and widowers.
Then we go back to church and have hot chocolate and hot sandwiches.

A fine story about those kids and their selfless act of kindness.  You prompted a memory of when my wife and  a couple girlfriends of her saddle club geared up and rode over to the local nursing home (accompanied by her burros, Dan & Julio) to carole to the elderly.  One lady shed a few tears because memories of her childhood on the farm came flooding back to her.
Horse folks are like that; you did good.

We do it where we are now, its warm. There is a herd of us that grows each year. We roam the streets in golf carts singing and stop when folks come out to listen. There tends to be food and alcohol [ just a wee-bit ] involved and a party afterward. Since the caroling itself is a party, its a twofer.

My (new) neighbor across the street has put a blinking/traveling 18" wide border of white lights around all his roof edges, and I find it irritating.  This is not Christmasy to me.  It's more like ET calling home, or a used car lot.  

I have good curtains.  

Sang in our HS (concert, madrigal and men's) choirs, and we always did a great Christmas concert.  I no longer sing (worth a crap).

Just left the church with 2 tractors with hay on 2 trailers going around the country side by our church caroling and to finish it off hot chocolate and cookies. This is a group of kids from the church. We do it every year.
