Jerry & Sherry Sheffer

Sarasota FL

« on: January 01, 2020, 05:59:31 AM »

Thursday is Sherry’s last day with Frontier, was GTE when she started then Verizon and unfortunately Verizon sold, however she has her numbers (20 years) and one lump sum is now re-invested and no more long daily drives to Tampa.   She will look for a local job (can be part time and what she does will not matter)  and we were thinking something at a School so she can take summers off for extended Vacations as that is my off season and I can go.  Her parking in Tampa and tolls on the crosstown combined was just under $200 per month and then the gas and wear and tear on her car, there is savings in that now! Why work one day into 2020? Well by doing that she gets 4 weeks paid vacation and 7 floaters paid, she can handle one more day. Anyway looking forward to some Saturday ride to eat meets soon. Me, well she says I have to stay working for the government as the golden handcuffs are getting larger - not fair!

Well, it sounds like your wife is very smart!  Mine made we work until I was 68.  Just keep her happy.  ☺

Congrats to Sherry.  Retired at the end of 2012 from AT&T which was Bellsouth until near the end.  Seems all the companies got bought out or sold somewhere along the line.  I worked for ALLTEL land line for 21 years before Bellsouth.  ALLTEL had previously been North Florida Telephone, then Mid-Continent Telephone before merging with Allied Telephone and becoming ALLTEL.  After leaving them in 1999 Windstream was spun off as the land line company.  Such is corporate America nowadays.
Small retirement from Windstream and small retirement from AT&T but the best thing that AT&T does is put money into an HRA at their cost which pays most of our secondary medical with Blue Cross.  Turns out that is a big benefit considering what a lot of our friends have to pay for what is termed supplemental insurance.
Best advice I can give to anyone is to put money into the 401K at work especially if they match all or part of the contribution.  There were folks that had the opportunity and failed to do so as they were cutting their expenses too close or single family income that could not spare even the match amount.
Congrats again to Sherry I am quite sure that she won't miss the driving and getting up early.

It should be exciting times ahead!
My wife is a teacher and at the end of this school year she will have 31.5 years in and she turns 55 in July she plans to retire on her birthday.  I she no end in sight for me as the owner of a small business I have no pension plan but if we cut back a bit we can live on my wife's pension along with what we have saved.

Congrats to you both! Between the pies and those delicious soft gingerbread cookies I think she could make a good part-time home baked income. Let me know when I can place my cookie order!!!

Congratulations Sherry on time served. Hope you find something that feels more like a hobby than a job. Makes going into work that much easier.

Well played young lady....well played.  cooldude  Take a breather from work and see if you really want to find another job. If you're restless, then fine but make it one you really enjoy. Easier to get up in the morning if so. I found retirement was a job I could really get in to, makes me get up at the crack of 10:00 most days.  Wink
