NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION DAY
https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-law-enforcement-appreciation-day-january-9/

Across the country on January 9th each year, citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities.  They’ve answered a call to public service that is demanding and often unappreciated.
From local, state and federal, their duties command dedication. The jobs are often thankless and take them away from their families for long hours. Rarely do they know what their days have in store for them. Often law enforcement are the only paid emergency resource a community has. More often they work in coordination with other local, state, and federal organizations to make communities safer.
On National Law Enforcement Day, we have an opportunity to thank them for their service and offer a token of respect.

So, if you have an opportunity, tell a cop you appreciate them and their efforts.

Ya might want to thank them prior to walking up and grabbing them to give them that hug first.  Wink

LEOs get very rich working in New Jersey highest avg salary 94k/yr in '16 dropped to 90k/yr in '19 due to retirements, supervisors make 130-160k/yr,  over 20 chiefs make 200+k/yr.   when retired they all make about the same salary with medical, then very high % leave the state to live in a lower taxed state leaving the highest property tax state in the country which paid their salaries and retirement. they save on transportation cost to work all keep their patrol car to drive home and to the station. My local town I've seen them living over 45 minutes away in another low tax county. Saw supervisor from my town lives in another county, again lower taxes and his house is a 600k house. I've met LEOs in my town that are actually from other states, moved here for the salary and benefits and after their 20 moving back to their home state.  very high % never drawn their gun during their whole career.  NJ state workers are very similar.

Dangerous job?, usually a lie of the police unions to get higher salaries.  According to the 2016 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS),
LEOs are not listed in The Top 10 Most Dangerous Jobs in America, and from some research have never been in the top. Transportation accidents were the leading cause of job fatalities, resulting in 40% of all workplace deaths in 2016. That figure includes 632 truck drivers, 116 farmers and 62 groundskeepers who were killed, among others.  In the same year, workplace violence surpassed “falls, trips and slips” to become the second most common danger. That includes homicides at work, which increased by 20%, to 500 cases, the highest figure since 2010.

“When people think workplace homicide, they think disgruntled employee going on a rampage. That’s actually a relatively rare form,” says James Alan Fox, professor of criminology at Northeastern University. “The overwhelming majority of workplace homicides, back in the ’80s and ’90s, as well as today, are basically robberies and assaults by customers — not coworkers.”  (politicians want to disarm people)
Fifty-one police officers were killed on the job in 2016, according to BLS (not including traffic deaths). That’s a 50% increase from the 34 police homicides in 2015, but still historically low compared to the early 1990s.

I know many disagree but above are Bureau of Labor Statistics and not mine.

Don't know about your local LEO's, but would probably not go up and give one a hug.  Shake their hands, give them a at-boy, but not a hug.

Though we do have a couple that would consider it, female types and not bad looking.    2funny

Some years ago on my birthday, I got caught hauling ass (around a glut of cages) by an absolute beauty of a female officer (not a rookie, maybe 35).  I pulled us off into a nasty muddy construction site to get out of the horrible traffic.

Why did you ride off into this crap?

Maam, it's not safe out there for me or you.  (big smile from her)

Listen, you got me fair and square and I have no good excuse, other than getting around all those backed up cars.  And it's my birthday today, and I'm being a bad boy.
(another big smile from her) (I'm a boy all right, but old enough to at least be her dad)

She looks at my license and says... huh, it is your birthday.

Yes maam.  When you run me on your computer, you'll see I have a clean record.  Also, you'll discover I have a permit, but my Jframe is in the saddlebag, not on me, and I'm law and order, all the way. (another smile).

She comes back from her unit and says she's giving me a birthday present and no ticket today.  Big smile from me (but I'm not going to screw things up by attempting to hug her).  Thank you very much maam.

As I'm getting the helmet on and bike ready to ride back out of the mud hole, I ask... BTW, what did you clock me at?

22 over the limit.  Holy crap, I didn't know I was that fast, I'll be more careful.

Do that.

All things considered, that was my best birthday present ever (and in my county, more like a miracle).

I had a KHP trooper shake my hand for being a responsible citizen with a CCW and top shelf J-frame with Crimson Trace green laser grips, on me - said "you're going to save somebody someday with that."  He thought it was funny when I said "I'm on my third 5-yr CCW and in those 12 years (at that time) of licensed carry, none of my guns have shot anybody.  They must be defective."  At this time KS had legalized Constitutional Carry the previous year and he had asked if I was carrying.

After shaking my hand he handed me my ticket for a rolling stop - didn't care I was pulling a very heavy Timeout camper and the stop area was covered with sand and it was dark and I was very tired after riding all the way from Kentucky and there was no traffic at this small town, exit off the freeway.  It was safer to NOT stop. Under the same circumstances I will do exactly the same again.  I WAS out of state so the ticket payment was assured revenue.

I didnt hug one but went to lunch at a local eatery and there was a table with 4 local PD officers having lunch and I was able to get the waitress to give me their check and not tell who covered it. They finished before me and looked all around for The culprit. I guess none will make detective soon 2funny 2funny

A nice gesture.  cooldude

I actually pulled up beside two different LEOs (at traffic lights) that day and signaled for them to roll their windows down.  When they did, I thanked them for all they do.   I got big smiles and thumbs up from both.   Felt Good.
