Looking for some advice/suggestions from some of our members who have experience modifying our great machines. I experienced my second speedometer cable failure this morning; I had a new longer speedometer cable made to accommodate the additions/modifications made to the front of my Valkyrie. My question is, is there a Honda stock speedometer cable from another model that is (approximately 1/2 - 1 inch) longer and compatible with the Valkyrie?
Separately I am looking for a straight (usable) front rim for a 97-99 Valkyrie Tourer for a different project. Hope everyone is doing well, I hope to get out with the group soon.
Ride safe Bill

I have an extra cable you can have but I guess the stock is not the answer, What about going digital?

Hey Bill
Have not had the need for a longer speedo cable so I can't help there.
What is it causing it to break, not enough slack?

Jerry thank you for the offer but the stock one binds when stretched; I have to remove the current one to see where it failed, the previous one failed at the joint where it was joined with the extension, I can only assume this one failed at the same spot.
Don, I replied to your pm. Thank you, I’ll be in touch to work out the details. I have your number from previous gatherings.
Thanks again for the offers, I have a few ideas on how to correct the problem so more to follow once I make some time to remove the wheel assembly to see where it broke and if my idea will work.
Ride safe, Bill

Jerry, I’m not crazy about going digital, I want to keep everything as stock as possible or at least have the look of stock. Thanks again, Bill

Jack, not sure, I believe the boys were not as tender on her when I took her in for a new front tire. I usually change my own front tire but I have a nagging injury that is preventing me from doing some everyday activities. Hope to get out with you guys soon. Ride safe, Bill

The following website used to have a longer speedometer cable for tachometer relocation. When clicking on the link for the tach/speedo, it appears to redirect to another website. However you can probably send them an email asking them about the longer cable, they can probably point you in the right direction: http://www.xf6-custom.com/valkpartspage.html

Have you recently cleaned and regreased the front wheel speedometer hub assembly?
The plastic gear, drive washer and two thin spacer washers need to be cleaned and regreased periodically. I have found that the grease gets gritty and the innards don’t turn smoothly when they are dirty and contain thickened grease.
Once the internal parts are removed then the worm drive that the speedo cable attaches to can be cleaned with carb cleaner to remove all the old gunk.
Just a thought....hope this helps.

The cable being turned at the bottom and held stationary at the top would obviously brake the cable by a twisting force. Where is it braking and is it in the same place? Is it braking due to a twisting force or a stretching force? Is the cable in a tight curve causing to much friction and braking because of twisting due to its length, to long or to short?

Thank you Jim I will check out that website for sure.
Avanti, It is breaking at the solder/welding point where the cable was lengthened, the reason for asking for a stock replacement rather than trying to reattach the cable where it was joined. After two failures I think it makes more sense to find something that is longer to avoid introducing a weak point by attempting to reattach the break with heat.
9Ball, I think the boys at a local shop were a little rougher with her when they changed out a front tire for me. I usually change out my front tire but due to time constraints and a nagging injury my better half talked me in to taking it to a local shop to have a new tire installed. They were awestruck by the Valkyrie.
Thanks again to everyone who has offered up parts and suggestions. Ride safe, Bill

Firefight, Thank you that is definitely worth trying. Yes, not exactly sure how the two ends were joined, I think your option just might be the right way to go. Thanks again. Ride safe, Bill

Well I got my speedometer cable complete and ready to install, now I am waiting for a new cable so I can harvest the top retainer that screws onto the back of the speedometer. The retainer crumbled in my fingers as I attempted to unscrew it today. Two steps forward and one backward, all good, I was able to figure out why one of my spotlights stopped working. I ran a new ground wire and now my spotlights are working as they should. Thanks again to everyone who made suggestions and offered parts, the cable that firefighter offered through Amazon worked perfectly. Should be a quick install/fix once I get the right parts in hand. Ride safe, Bill

Well after finishing a repair on my speedometer cable it is very clear that I didn’t know what I was talking about or thinking about on how to repair a broken speedometer cable. Now it is obvious to me that you don’t fix or lengthen a cable by welding or soldering, I ended up buying a new cable so I could harvest the needed hardware to be able to reinstall my aftermarket lengthened speedometer cable. As said before the blank cable kit that firefighter recommended worked great. All is good, hope to finish up the mods on Friday or Saturday when I get some free time. Ride safe, Bill

I also need some help, upon purchasing a new Tow hitch receiver i was told to have the backside serviced every 10,000 miles but not to trust honda as they have no clue for our older models any one here can help? I am in no way mechanically inclined and live in miami willing to travel for a good mechanic in the SFL region or if anyone has any tips and suggestions. Side note anyone know of any digital gauges that are good and work with Valkyries? Dakota Digital gauges one of the main manufacturers of digital gauges doe not have any thats a direct fit besides a general cluster. Im taking out the factory radio which means i will lose my Gas gauge but figure i could up date them all if i find some solo gauges that work 2000 I/s here.

If you remove the speedo cluster, it might be worth replacing the fairing all together. Finding one with duel lights to keep the theme going can be challenging. Some here have used the HD road glide model. Oil and temp gauge replacements are no problem, the fuel gauge is a bit trickier.
