Can anybody recommend pipes for my 1999 Honda Valkyrie GL1500CT. I have just recently purchased it and the previous owner installed cobra pipes and then removed the baffles. Sounds horrible. I would like to put something on close to the stock sound. I have searched for a used set of pipes but no luck.

They are pricey, but the best if you want that stock performance and nice throaty sound

I went through the same thing when I got my valkyrie... it didn't have cobras on there, it had drilled out OEMs that were rusty. For a while I ran some pretty good Interstate pipes on my bike, until I finally found a real nice set of Tourer pipes. There's a small dent in at least one of the headers on the Interstate pipes, but I still have them...
Ebay and craigslist occasionally have nice pipes, and the Pinwall ebay reseller often has lots of stuff - he knows what it is worth, though...

where are u located? might be somebody close to you that has a set but doesn't want to go through the trouble of shipping. Like me, I have a set of Thrush glass pack pipes for sale and I have no idea how to ship them.

Yea......I have been lately contemplating the opposite!!!
I was thinking of making the sound, as it should be.
Like a Ferrari race car!!
To each His/Her own I guess? BUT!!! The sound of the pipes, ARE all in the "tuning".
If your bike is tuned shitty to begin with......YES.......straight pipes will only exaggerate that aspect of the bike........
I am no longer an Interstate rider anymore......it is just a "show toy" now.......so loud pipes I could live with.

Vikings, they say, increase horsepower a little, but are not quiet and are very hard to find.
MarkT's reworked OEM pipes, they say, increase horsepower and versions of them are not too loud, they say, and they are readily available.
Since the OP mentioned "too loud" in his post, I'll say from my own experience that Interstate pipes are the quietest OEM pipes (longest piggies and narrow echo-chamber tips).

I have Mark T from Horse Apple Ranch currently building me a set. Spoke to him last night and he's currently working on them so hopefully I get them later this month. I've heard really good things about his pipes so really looking forward to installing them on the bike.

I have Vikings, 15HP per dynos viking did, 20HP increase with the air box and jetting I did, I dyno'd with them. They are only loud when on the throttle hard, cruising nice sound. can be re-wrapped to reduce sound levels even more, which I did.

Many memebers in Florida. (And I am sure many sets are around) Your best bet is find a set of nice used exhaust.

The OEM ones are hollow copper rings that mash down flat, you might not see the old ones up in there unless you look, might have to pick them out... -Mike

You might want to hang on to them for a little bit to see how you like them. I bought a set of stock pipes and they were too tame for my liking. I ended up putting the truck stacks back on. Plus, If you want to modify the new ones, you have backups if you need to send them out.

Thanks for all the advise. I did start the removal of the right side. I did find one Header Bolt broke off. Everything else looks good. Does any body know the part number for the Header Bolt?

If you mean the (crushed) exhaust gaskets, take a small flatnose screwdriver or punch or icepick and pry them out (carefully to the ports). If any are stubborn, get an edge out and use needlenose to pull it out. Then a little cleaning (not the old gaskets). And get new ones. There is an opinion on here what kind (of several) works better, but I don't know it. I think they like OE hollow copper ones mentioned above, over fat fibrous ones, so it is easier to get the pipes on and torqued to spec. And by torque, they are only supposed to get 7 ft lbs each, or you will snap studs. Seven pounds is like a bit more than snugging up. And you have to run the bike hot (go for a ride or two), and then carefully torque them again. Maybe three times before correct. Lest you end up with exhaust leaks later, or the spendy acorn nuts fall off. Two of my exhaust studs are held on with small double hex nuts, sistered up. (the most hidden ones)

I have changed my pipes multiple times and have never changed the exhaust gaskets. I have a set of new Honda exhaust gaskets from the first time I was going to change the exhaust system but when my original gaskets didn’t want to come out, I just left them in the heads. Haven’t had an exhaust leak yet. Just for your info in case you have stubborn gaskets.

I installed stainless split washers on the exhaust studs under the nut. Torqued them down once, and they’ve never backed off.

Funny how about ten years ago more than a few posts on this site were guys wanting to make their bikes louder, I recall suggesting that rather than destroying their stock pipes buy some previously molested pipes and save the stock ones. Personally I like the sound of the stock pipes, but thats my opinion. Looks like the chicken has come home to roost.

I have a set of pipes that are like brand new... I bought them years ago from a guy that put cobras on his interstate so the end pipe is horizontal not vertical... I mean these are extreme low miles... Only problem Im in British Columbia so not sure of the shipping... great pipes though
