Mr. Oil Burner.  What did you torque these up to?  I've tried to research the recommended torque but have had a hard time finding it.

Thanks for sharing.

Torque the bearing to the plate with 40 ft/lbs if you use the screws in the parts list.  See reply #30 in this thread.

Hello gents,  sorry to re-open the post  angel angel

Firstly Happy New Year. Hope this one will be better.

I have sold my Standard and got new to me Interstate. After few miles I hear some noise from the belts area and I suspect its one of the pulley.

I have decided to change the belts and rebuild both pulleys. I ordered the springs, belts, pulleys etc.
Only the problem I have is to find the bolts.
Oil Burner has recommended bolt with grade 12.9 but I found only grade 10.9.
Any advise if I can use them? Can this be a problem to use 10.9 to hold those pulleys?

Thanks for any help  cooldude Jiri

10.9 class hardware should be no problem. In fact, the nuts I used were 10.9. The bolts I used were 12.9 because that's what my hardware place had in stock. While this is an important place to make sure is done right, I don't believe the tensile or shear loading on the timing belt tensioners is enough to tax a 10mm 8.8, so I think 10.9 is probably overkill. I'd have no worries using a 10.9 here. If you want the data, here's a chart with some hardware ratings: https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/materials-and-grades/bolt-grade-chart.aspx

If you like, stick the bolts into a piece of cardboard. The lengths of the bolts are different.

Thanks man for reply. I will use them. I thought there isn't that much pressure just wanted to be sure.

@RonW  Thanks for hands up. I know about the different sizes of all bolts as i seen and read a lot. Its mentioned on the GoldWing forum post.

The top second bolt on right needs to be sealed. What one should use for the task pls?

Thx Jiri

"What sealant?" is a question everybody asks and nobody knows. The tube of sealant I used is buried in my locker room. Unfortunately memory doesn't serve and I forget. I think it was silicone. Hasn't leaked and haven't taken said bolt off since.

Just some regular gasket sealer, I use the grey stuff in a tube. Doesn't need to have a huge load of it.

I just used a little RTV sealant on the threads. I'm sure that an anaerobic sealer would be fine as well.

Apologies to bump this thread... but I am looking for old tensioners that I can do this mod to in advance of getting ready to do the belt replacement.

Got any in you parts closet? Scrap is fine, just really want the back plates....

Thanks all....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

--- Jeez, just looking at this.... the back plates are just blanked out steel.... I could laser cut the shape out at the shop out of stainless steel, easy peazy....
just need a template of original.  - Probably would need to cut the chamfer separately....

The nuts I used are mechanically locking; like a Nylock but without Nylon. Prevailing torque lock nuts.

I’ve not heard of those, I’ll check them out.  cooldude

I believe "prevailing torque" is the correct name. They are also called "Stover nuts" (name brand?) and I've heard them referred to as "crushed nuts". If you look at the top of the nut, the threaded hole looks out of round.

You shouldn't use them more than once but as important is the bolt should be also replaced.

Great old post! Could only get plain black bolts locally. Should I paint them after mounting bearings or is cover sealed sufficiently to prevent rusting?

A few years back, I made stainless steel replacement plates + fasteners for the Hyundai tensioner bearings, a handful of guys here have them.

Hi -- Double check what grade bolts you have. Many bolts/nuts from a local hardware store are only Grade 5.... I wouldnt use those..  Cool

What a great old post!!  This stuff is priceless.  I got worried a couple of years ago and bought 2 new Honda ones.  I am now thinking about doing this mod to them and replacing the ones that have 100k miles on them.  i replaced the belts about 10k ago, but it won't hurt to do it again.

Thanks Oil Burner!!
