Some dummy (me) smashed 2 of the airbox tubes that go to the carbs a bunch of years ago, and didn't realize it. I recently did a "shiny desmog" and  discovered this. I saw on a parts fiche that you can buy just the tubes. Anyone have any experience replacing these?

UPDATE
I got off work early today and pulled the tank back off. Finding out that you can spin the tubes was a real help, lol. I had 3 that weren't on very good. Got them all squared away and got everything back together. Fired her up and at first I didn't think it helped much. Still seemed a little sluggish so even though it's chilly and the roads are wet, I took it out. It seemed the longer I rode and got on it some, it was running better. (I put new spark plugs in it last week too) It was stored with Stabil in the tank like I've done for 20 years. When I did the desmog, my #1 air tube and the #2 air tube were both pretty much plugged solid. I should mention that it's a '98 Standard with 160,000 miles. Before I left, I dumped some Sea Foam in the tank and I've NEVER done that before. I rode for about a half hour or so and at the end it seemed to be running pretty good. A couple of questions I have are, were anyone else's air tubes plugged up like that? And did anyone else's bike sound A LOT different?  I have Cobra pipes, btw.

No experience replacing but knowing the materials in question here.  I would lube the ends up with rubbing alcohol to ease assembly. The factory ones are further sealed with some silicone or RTV sealant.

As always lube is your friend, Sill- glyde from napa works good, I read some place that that sealant on the tubes from the factory was just to hold them in place during assembly, I know on my 99 it wasn't sealing a damn thing so I cleaned it all off.

never pulled the tubes out of the Valk but I have other bikes, it takes some wiggling and twisting back an forth, maybe a plastic or nylon tool to help ease the lip of the tube to seat in the box.

They're rubber, how do you smash that? Just line them up by turning them in place while in the airbox and reinstall the box. Make sure the other end completely seals down over the top of the carb.  cooldude

2 of them were smashed and clamped a long time ago and they're pretty deformed. I did NOT know you can turn them in the air box.  Undecided  That piece of info should make a huge difference, lol. I won't be able to tear back into it until Friday after work. Thanks for the help all. I'll let you know how it turns out. I PRAY that those aren't sealing good because my bike, which ran perfect before the desmog, now seems like it's running on 4 or 5 cylinders.   Embarrassed

Yes, I replaced all six of mine last year when I did a major overhaul.

From experience, use a box cutter to remove the old ones...I tried manual persuasion and while it can be done there is no reason to struggle with them since they are getting thrown away.

To position them properly, there is a rubber tab on the air tubes that goes into a set of “I  I” looking bumps on the air box.

Just fold the tops and force them into the holes.   I tried silicone spray and all it did was make them slippery in my hands.  They do not require any sealant. Tribal knowledge from when these bikes first came out was that the cracked residue you now see was an assembly aid to keep the tubes in position when fitting the new air box.  This was not intended as a sealant.  They seal perfectly fine as is due to their design.  Feel free to silicone them if you want but it isn’t necessary.

Good luck...

If you mean the metal air tubes that attach to the underside of the cylinder bank, mines were almost completely gunked up. Like it needed draino to unclog.

Yup. Mine were a little worse, I think.   Undecided
